Three years ago, five promising young singers appeared on the hit show, “The X Factor”, and unfortunately, these young singers only placed third in the competition. Instead of throwing these boys into the rubbish heap, fans decided to make them famous. Thanks in large part to social media, the group was quickly propelled to international stardom. Perhaps, it was their early brush with rejection that makes these young singers so compelling, or perhaps, it is just their natural charisma. Regardless of what compels fans to love this band, the fact remains that they just can’t get enough of these five boys, and the upcoming feature documentary, “One Direction: This Is Us”, is just what loyal fans have been waiting for.
On Aug. 30, 2013, “One Direction: This Is Us” is finally scheduled to hit theaters nationwide, and fans can’t wait to see what this flick will hold. Directed by Morgan Spurlock, the film is in 3D, and it follows the British boy-band One Direction and its five young members, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson. The documentary explores aspects of the young stars personal lives as well as their professional lives, and the film’s director ties these elements together seamlessly. Spurlock is most commonly known as the director of “Super Size Me”, and he brings that fun yet investigative spirit to this film as well. His job is to show the band as realistically as possible, and according to early reviewers, Spurlock was able to achieve that effect.
Fans have been hoping to get a glimpse of this film for months, but the producers have tried to prevent any scenes from reaching the public. One scene, however, has been leaked, and fans couldn’t be more delighted. One fan was reported as saying that she cried through the entire three-and-a-half-minute clip, and she couldn’t wait to see what secrets the rest of the film held. In the short leaked scene, the band is shown in the studio at BBC Radio 1 as they react to the news that their song “Little Things” has just reached the top of the charts. This scene depicts the very first time that the band had a number-one hit, and their excitement is palpable.
Some of the allure of that scene is that it is completely unscripted, and fans hope that the rest of the film will also feel the same. There was a lot of pressure on the boy band to release a perfect documentary, but in spite of that pressure, they didn’t want to create something scripted and fake. Instead, they wanted to invite fans to see them as they really are.
The film’s first scene shows just how popular this band really is. In a scene that is reminiscent of Beatlemania, fans are shown jumping up and down and waving their camera phones as One Direction arrives at its hotel. This scene serves to illustrate the constant pandemonium that surrounds the group anytime they are seen in public. It and others like it also serve as a contrast to the scenes of everyday life that punctuate the film. In one everyday scene, two members of the group are depicted talking about Miso soup. Scenes such as this remind fans that the group’s members are just ordinary humans in spite of their extraordinary fame.
Another section of the film explores just how and why this boy band became so famous. There are even diagrams that illustrate the group’s popularity in countries around the world. However, diagrams cannot explain the group’s entire journey toward success, and to further explain their leap toward fame, one of their grandmothers is interviewed onscreen. Their parents also appear in the film, and in one scene, one of the boys’ mothers even vandalizes a phone booth by writing a message of love about the boy band.
After exploring their rise toward stardom, the film takes a look at the stars’ childhoods before worldwide fame was ever on their radar. Some of the childhood scenes are comedic. For example, one scene claims that Louis’ parents made him sleep in a coffin, so he would turn into a vampire, but clearly, this is tongue in cheek. When looking at Zayn’s childhood, the film documents a pretty average teenage boy’s life-full of shirts bearing words like helicopter.
Five boys, worldwide fame and a bevy of hit songs are all explored in this film. While watching this documentary, fans will get to see their favorite British singers in a new way. However, details surrounding the film are scarce, and fans may have to wait until the end of August before they can learn more.
