One Direction’s Harry Styles and Grammy winner Taylor Swift got a lot of media attention when they dated each other from mid-November 2012 to early January 2013. But their failed romance, which happened during filming of the 3-D documentary “One Direction: This Is Us,” won’t be in the movie, according to a Daily Mirror report that was published on July 29, 2013.
Meanwhile, on July 30, 2013, Vevo premiered a behind-the-scenes featurette about the making of One Direction’s “Best Song Ever” music video. According to Vevo, the “Best Song Ever” music video holds Vevo’s record for the most views (12.3 million) during the first 24 hours of a video’s premiere.
“One Direction: This Is Us” arrives in U.K. cinemas on Aug. 29, 2013, and in U.S. and Canadian cinemas on Aug. 30, 2013. Release dates in other countries may vary.
Oscar-nominated documentarian Morgan Spurlock directed the film, which will take a look at One Direction’s rapid rise from being a contestant act on “The X Factor” U.K. in 2010 to being the biggest-selling act from “The X Factor” by 2012. Footage from One Direction’s 2013 tour will also be included in the movie. Spurlock and “The X Factor” executive producer Simon Cowell are among the movie’s producers. “One Direction: This Is Us” has a combination of concert footage and behind-the-scenes footage. Most of the concert footage was filmed in late 2012 and early 2013.
As previously reported, One Direction will attend the movie’s London premiere on Aug. 20, 2013, and the movie’s New York City premiere on Aug. 26, 2013.
As previously reported, One Direction’s “Best Song Ever” (from “One Direction: This Is Us”) has debuted in the Top 10 on iTunes in several countries on July 22, 2013, the day the song was released. It was also the same day that the music video for “Best Song Ever” premiered. Vevo announced that One Direction’s “Best Song Ever” video had 12.3 million views across Vevo in the 24 hours following its premiere. According to Vevo, One Direction’s “Best Song Ever” surpassed the previous record holder, Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop,” which had 10.7 million views in its first 24 hours.
“Best Song Ever” will also be on One Direction’s third album, whose title and release date are to be announced. The song debuted at No. 2 in the U.K.
Having a Top 10 iTunes hit worldwide has become a familiar pattern for One Direction, the biggest-selling global act to emerge from “The X Factor.” One Direction came in third place on “The X Factor” U.K. in 2010.
As previously reported, teasers for the “Best Song Ever” music video were released the week of July 17, 2013. The teasers showed the members of One Direction (Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson) in various “disguises.”
The “Best Song” ever music video was filmed in Miami and directed by Ben Winston from a story by Winston and actor/comedian James Corden.
Styles and Swift have not publicly commented on why their relationship ended. However, a source close to Swift told Vanity Fair in the magazine’s April 2013 issue: “The whole time she says she feels like he’s looking at every girl … [He] disappears one night and after that it was like he just didn’t want to keep going.”
An unnamed source commented to the Daily Mirror about Swift being edited out of the One Direction documentary: “There was no way Taylor would appear. Fans don’t want to see it. He [Harry Styles] is done with talking about her and the management do not want to annoy Taylor any more. This was a no-brainer.”
