One Direction’s Harry Styles, 19, will be one of the best men at the wedding of his mother, Anne Cox, and her longtime partner, Robin Twist, who has been a stepfather to Styles for several years. On May 31, 2013, the Daily Mirror reported that the wedding will take place on June 1, 2013, but to keep things as private as possible, the wedding guests will be given short notice on the location of the wedding.
According to the Daily Mirror, other guests at the wedding will be Styles’ sister Gemma; Twist’s son Mike (who will be one of the other best men at the wedding); and other members of One Direction.
Cox and Twist have been an important part of the One Direction’s phenomenal journey since the beginning. They were with Styles when he auditioned for “The X Factor” U.K. in 2010. Styles and four other contestants (Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson) were rejected as solo singers and put together in a group by Simon Cowell and other “X Factor” decision makers. Styles came up with the name One Direction, and the group had its first rehearsals at Cox and Twist’s house in Holmes Chapel, England.
This won’t be the first wedding attended by several members of One Direction. In 2012, Styles, Payne and Horan went to the wedding of Marvin Humes of JLS and Rochelle Wiseman of The Saturdays. Also in 2012, Styles, Horan and Tomlinson were at the wedding of actor/comedian James Corden and Julia Carey.
One Direction came in third place on “The X Factor” U.K. and went on to become the biggest-selling worldwide act to emerge from “The X Factor,” by having No. 1 hits and sold-out tours in several countries.
Cox is reportedly the One Direction mother who is the most involved in her son’s career. Styles, who describes himself as a “mama’s boy,” took his mother as his date to the 2013 Brit Awards.
In 2012, Styles bought a four-bedroom house for his mother as a birthday gift.
A source told the Daily Star: “Harry is really close to his mum Anne and loves being able to treat her to nice things. This is a special gift to her, to say thank you for all the wonderful things she’s done over the years. Anne’s struggled with two divorces and being a single mother. Harry couldn’t wait to give her the keys on her birthday as a massive thank you.”
Harry Styles’ father, Des Styles, got divorced from Cox when Harry was 7 years old.
In a 2012 interview with The People, Des Styles commented on his son Harry’s playboy reputation: “I never needed to sit him down and tell him about the birds and the bees. I tried to train him up as we went along. We had conversations and it was almost as though he’d say, ‘Yeah, Dad, I’m on board with that,’ rather than going all sicky and saying, ‘Oh, Dad, don’t talk about things like that,’ as some kids do. He’s not one to run three girls at once. He’s a one-girl person when he’s with somebody.
“There was a short period when he had several different girlfriends, one after the other, and I said ‘Look, don’t get a reputation because at some point the girls will catch on to that.’ He said ‘Yeah’ and took it on board. But whether he tries to live by that mantra I’ve no idea.”
In a 2012 interview with Heat magazine, Cox said about Harry: “He’ll make a nice boyfriend when he’s ready. He’s very sensitive and isn’t a Jack the Lad. At the moment he doesn’t want to tie himself down. He had one or two girlfriends when he was younger, but no one very special.”
June 1, 2013 update: The Daily Mirror has photos from the wedding. The tabloid reports that Cox and Twist got married on June 1 in a small civil ceremony (42 guests) at Pecks restaurant, in Congleton, Cheshire, England, which was followed by lunch. One guest told the Daily Mirror: “Harry couldn’t stop smiling. He hardly left his mum’s side and she looked really proud of him. He sipped champagne and chatted to everyone.”
Harry Styles and Twist wore matching black suits, while the bride (who arrived in a Bentley) wore a simple white wedding dress. Harry’s sister Gemma was the maid of honor. As previously reported by the Daily Mirror, Harry Styles and Twist’s son Mike were both best men at the wedding. In the evening, the wedding reception was held at a nearby pub.
Footage of Harry at the wedding has been posted on You Tube.
June 7, 2013 update: Pecks restaurant owner Andy Pear told The Sun: “His speech was very witty. He had everyone roaring with laughter. And it was very emotional — people were in tears. He comes across as a very intelligent, engaging young man. He wrote the speech himself and it lasted around 10 minutes.”
