Anyone who’s ever sung along with Tony Bennett and left their heart in San Francisco knows that the city keeps calling you back – and what better opportunity to return to the city by the bay than the return of Outside Lands, one of the world’s most extraordinary gourmet music festivals.
For the past five years, Outside Lands has celebrated the culinary and musical bounty of San Francisco with a three-day summer festival that attracts gourmands and music lovers from all over the globe to Golden Gate Park.
Named for a remote area of 19th-century San Francisco that was once covered by sand dunes, Outside Lands 2013 will feature performances by more than 70 performing artists, including Paul McCartney, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nine Inch Nails, Kaskade, and D’Angelo.
Throughout the Sixties, Golden Gate Park existed as one of the most iconic symbols of the countercultural youth revolution. Flower childen and hippies from Haight-Ashbury congregated in the park during the “Summer of Love” in 1967 and for events such as the “Human Be-In,” which focused on communal living and ecological awareness.
In partnership with the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, Outside Lands has raised over $6 million for the benefit of the city’s parks in its first five years – and a 2011 economic study reported that the Outside Lands festival generates over $60 million annually to the San Francisco economy.
For many Outside Lands’ participants, the most pressing issue is “what am I going to eat and drink.” Outside Lands 2013 festival will feature five unique culinary experiences: A Taste of the Bay Area, Wine Lands, Beer Lands, Outside Lambs, and Choco Lands. With more than 200 food and drink options, Outside Lands is determined to showcase why Northern California’s culinary scene is, arguably, the nation’s best.
Each year, Outside Lands’ organizers work to highlight the Bay Area and the many components that make it one of the most desirable places to live and visit – and eat. A Taste of the Bay Area, for example, features 75 vendors, offering food from many of San Francisco’s most notable restaurants.
Feast on this menu: BBQ shrimp and creamy grits, chimichurri fries, crispy mac-n-cheese, corn with smoked pimenton, Malaysian nachos, pork belly burgers, almond cumin slaw, New Orleans iced coffee, s’mores, frozen hot chocolate, Philadelphia cheesesteaks, parmesan fries, churros, fried chicken and waffles, Gilroy garlic mac-n-cheese, coconut chai, Thai young coconuts, hot detox tea, ricotta artichoke sandwiches, pork bacon chili with cheddar – and more.
Outside Lands will announce more artists, restaurants, and wineries in the coming weeks. In the meantime, you should book your flights and follow Outside Lands on Facebook and on Twitter. Outside Lands’ Eager Beaver, Special and Advance tickets have sold out already, but Regular 3-Day General Admission and VIP tickets are still available.
