Most consumer electronics can be difficult to buy without the proper research. Do you go with what’s cheapest? Or the brand you recognize the most? Or the one with the most features at the most reasonable price? Well the answer isn’t always going to be the easiest thing to find, and one could look at the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G and wonder why they should choose that over the ‘big brands’. OWC (Other World Computing) makes high quality products typically aimed at the Mac user, however many of their products can be used on PC’s, and are of some of the highest quality out there. The Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G (MEP6G) is far from the exception, for an SSD it is a very high quality drive that stacks exceptionally to other SSD’s.
The OWC MEP6G is a 2.5 inch Solid State Drive, boasting 60,000 IOPS, 559MB/s Read and 527MB/s write speed. Spouting out specs is fine and dandy if you want to know the potential but in the real world environment, on a PC or Mac that is used for day to day use, no SSD is going to reach those specifications.
In testing this SSD was peaking at 423MB/s Read and 378MB/s write. To break it down in to more common terms, to transfer a 2GB movie file from the drive, it would take under 5 seconds, and to transfer to the drive it would take just over 5 seconds.
Extended read and writes will pack less of a punch because of the process the computer uses to differentiate between various files and transfer. To test the extended write speeds to this drive, a 40 GB folder of about 7000 files was used and it evened out at about 200MB/s. For reading from this drive, it performed like a champ leveling out at 403MB/s read.
The final test performed was to see how fast the system booted up from being completely off, the computer this was tested on, normally runs on an SSD that allows it to boot up and ready for use in 25 seconds. With the OWC it reduced it to 23 seconds. Which is a rather large amount at an already very fast boot up speed.
As it is with many accessories aimed toward Apple computers the OWC MEP6G is a bit more expensive that some other products in its class. It did perform better than the same class drive from PNY and Samsung, and had a tug-o-war with the SanDisk Extreme winning and losing in some test.
Overall the OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD is a top performing drive with a kick that won’t disappoint anyone who plugs it into their computer, PC or Mac. The price is steep, about $60 or more than a comparable drive. OWC does offer a 30-Day No Hassle return policy if you decide it’s not the drive for you, but that’s unlikely. The drive is perfect for the person looking to get the most out of their computer no matter what side of the PC/Mac fence you stand on, it will provide the fastest write and read times possible and increase the speed of that your computer can run at.
