When it comes to films, one would be hard pressed to find a feast for the senses that surpasses that of Pacific Rim. The high-density, super-sized robotics inspired action propels the film from start to finish, almost to the point of disguising the film’s thin story line.
In what could be described as Godzilla meets Transformers, once the barrage of outstanding special effects slows down, it is not difficult to notice the odd concept of a high technology war machine that utilizes a medieval battle repertoire that includes throwing punches and swinging a cold steel blade. Despite the medieval and prehistoric overtones, the high tech robots are controlled by the physical movements of their human pilots to battle alien mega-monsters which makes for visually appealing fight scenes.
Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) steals the screen repeatedly with his portrayal of the quirky scientist Dr. Newton Geiszler. Dashing Charlie Hunnam and fetching Rikko Kikuchi star in the picture as pilots of a gigantic robot called a Jaeger that must team up to save the planet from aliens that are attempting to rid the planet of the human population.
Despite the flimsy plot, just for the special effects alone, this picture is worth viewing on the big screen.
