When “Transformers” was released, I had very high hopes because I grew up with them as a cartoon. For me, the movie was just ok and didn’t impress me much. The sequels were just extra money for Hollywood with a storyline that didn’t make sense at all. I’ve followed Guillermo del Toro work since “The Devil’s Backbone” and have been in love with his work. He has got some slack from Hollywood because he knows what he wants to make and knows how much it will cost but they just won’t give him the money for his projects. It was announced in 2011 that he got his hands on “Pacific Rim” and some details were released that it was like “Transformers” vs. “Godzilla”. With del Toro in the chair, I was very hopeful for this movie that I saw last night.
“Pacific Rim” starts in the year 2020 on an earth. In the Pacific Ocean there is an opening that acts as a one way portal to our world. Giant creatures, known as Kaiju, are the taller than most skyscrapers and are wreaking havoc all over the coastal areas. Each country was using basic tanks, planes and other means to destroy them but they kept coming from the portal. The UN and all the world leaders created the Jaeger program. Jaeger means hunter in German which is what these giant robots will do with the Kaiju.
Scientists have done the math and have figured that the attacks will keep coming more frequent with larger Kaiju and we will not be able to stop them. They have gathered all the Jaegers that are left on the coast of Hong Kong for one last battle and to try and come up with a plan to close the portal. Can the Jaeger’s hold up and defeat the Kaiju that could be coming through two or three at a time? You will have to go see this to find out if the world survives.
I’m going to start with saying there are few movies that make me feel like a kid again and this was one of them. This movie is everything that “Transformers” should have been. Guillermo didn’t go out and find the best actors like Bay did and made this movie work. Charlie Hunnan, who I will refer to in the rest of this review as Jax Teller because of “Sons of Anarchy” did a great job as his role as Becket. The head of the Jaeger program is played by Idris Elba who was Heimdall in “Thor” and is coming back for “Thor: The Dark World”.
“Pacific Rim” had a good story but it was more about seeing giant robots fight giant monsters. Stuff that we, well at least me, imagined when I was kid with my toys. It was like he jumped into every my head and took what I imagined and put it on the screen. Unfortunately I didn’t check this out in 3D and per my rule I probably won’t if I see it again. The movie is amazing and will have you cheering on the Jaegers with every blow. Go see “Pacific Rim” this weekend, go see it tonight, skip work and see it, just see it now.
