Attention Austin film lovers, it’s time for summer film school!
Austin’s Paramount and Stateside Theatres unveiled their 38th annual Summer Film Classics Series lineup today with the legendary “Casablanca” and “Annie Hall” opening the series on May 23 at the Paramount Theatre.
The 2013 lineup features over 125 films including many new prints, restored prints and some rare 70mm prints for Austin film lovers to enjoy this year. Every 35mm and 70 mm print will play at the Paramount Theatre while all the films scheduled to play at the Stateside Theatre will play digitally in high definition.
“As the new Film Programmer at the Paramount, I’ve had the great privilege of putting together this summer’s slate of films, and it has been a wonderful, eye-opening experience, particularly when it comes to booking all the 35mm prints we’re presenting,” says Stephen Jannise, Film Programmer for the Paramount and Stateside Theatres . “For all those thinking that 35mm is dead, I’d like to point out that we will be screening over 90 titles in glorious 35mm this summer, including films dating from 1932 to 2006. The Paramount Theatre is proud to preserve the grand tradition of 35mm exhibition, and we’ll be spinning those reels until the very last one wears out.”
The films making up the lineups are grouped into different themes and genres including film noir, musicals, Hitchcock films, Chaplin films, world cinema classics and more. There are also several special presentations including evenings with film critic Leonard Maltin and Turner Classic Movies’ Robert Osborne as well as a dance party hosted by Austin PRIDE after a screening of “The adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.”
The 2013 lineup will also feature a new series for the young ones in the family. Paramount Kids Classics will feature exciting and educational films for children and the rest of their families on 10 different Sundays with kids themed specials and discounted film tickets for families available.
Advance online tickets for screenings are $8 and tickets purchased at the Paramount Box Office or by phone are $10. The public are also encouraged to sign up to become a Film Fan and receive various perks depending on the price level pledged. In addition to those perks, Film Fans can purchase day-of-show screening tickets at a discount of $6.
In addition to film fan packages, the film series will also offer Flix Tix ticket booklets good for 10 admissions for the bargain price of $50 dollars. Film Fan badge holders can purchase Flix Tix booklets for an even greater discount of $40. Best of all, films in the same theme/genre group are often paired in double features which allows a film goer to use one ticket for both films as long as the films are in the same theatre, playing back-to-back and in the same theme/group. That means it’s possible to see as many as 20 classic films for as little as $40-$50.
