Over the weekend Sir Patrick Stewart was stateside for Comicpalooza, held in Houston, Texas. During a question and answer session a fan stepped forward and asked Patrick, besides acting what was he proud of? His answer was both eloquent and compassionate.
Patrick as addressed in the past his own child hood horrors, one such occurrence took place at an Amnesty International conference. Patrick’s speech was passionate, he referred to his mother several times, as well as stating that men needed to step forward and make a difference.
He said he recalled the police and the EMT’s saying to his mother, “Mrs. Patrick you must have done something to provoke him.” She had done nothing to provoke the violence against her. Domestic Violence has staggering statistics that continue to grow every year.
In addition to working with Amnesty International, Patrick works Refuge in England. Patrick referred to Refuge as a place where women and children can not only feel safe, but truly be safe. After making his impassioned speech Patrick asked, “My dear, are you okay?”
He ended the Q&A session by leaving the stage and embracing the young woman in a hug.
