If you have not been fortunate enough to hear about the great event about to happen in downtown Chicago this weekend, now is the time to take a moment and read all about it. PAWS Chicago is currently preparing for their 16th Annual Angels with Tails showcase event. Hundreds of Chicago’s homeless pets will be available this weekend; displayed all along Michigan Avenue and Oak Street. The animals will be both inside and outside to meet and greet their potential new ‘fur-ever’ families.
PAWS Chicago is our city’s largest No-Kill humane organization. For the past 15 years they have teamed up with other local shelter and rescue organization in order to introduce the faces along with the names of homeless Chicago animals. This year is no exception; this 16th year, PAWS and nearly 20 other organizations will present their animals in more than 40 stores along Michigan Avenue and Oak Street.
The general public is invited to stroll the sidewalks of Chicago. Press your nose against storefront windows in order to sample the joy that a pet can bring to your life. Meet the hundreds of puppies, dogs, kittens and cats that will be on scene looking adorable so that they can attract a new family to them.
The first Angels with Tails event was launched by PAWS Chicago in 1997. The advent of this event was to bring together shelters and rescue groups in order to showcase Chicago’s homeless pets on the city’s sidewalks and in its storefronts in the same locale as it is today.
The initial event day created awareness for the many homeless animals; saving their lives as a result. The result was that the public was finally informed that a staggering 42,500 canines and felines of all ages were being needlessly killed in Chicago that year alone!
Due to the new found awareness, thanks to media attention, the Chicago community became more involved. They finally wanted to help put a stop to this once hidden tragedy. Since then, the continuation of this tragedy has depleted substantially. Currently the number of animals killed each year in Chicago has been reduced by more than half.
Now, in 2013, 43 storefronts and windows have been offered up. The event begins at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Oak Street; along Michigan Avenue south to Ontario and Oak Street west just past Rush Street.
So clear your calendar for this Sunday, May 19th from Noon until 4:00 p.m. Bring your camera to get some fantastic shots of your children with adorable adoptable canines and felines. You also have the possibility of meeting Paula Fasseas, the PAWS Chicago Founder and Chairperson. If you are there to adopt, make certain that you have all of your paperwork in order beforehand!
