“Mistresses” will be premiering on ABC on June 3 and there is a lot of opinions on the show already, even before it has aired. On May 24,the Los Angeles Times wrote about the show and ABC provided sneak peeks on their website, which revealed what the show is really about.
Even though the name of the series sounds like it is advocating having affairs with married men, it really isn’t. While nobody should judge a book by its cover, the same can be said for television shows. That is not saying that a name is not important, but viewers need to be careful about dismissing a show just because of what it is titled… before knowing what it is really about.
The series, “Mistresses” is about four friends who are on different paths in their lives. Savi is trying to make partner in a law firm, but also is ready to start a family. However, her and her husband, Harry, are having fertility problems and she ends up cheating on him. She feels enormous guilt about it and that is compounded when she finds out that she is pregnant.
Josslyn is Savi’s younger sister and not too much has been revealed about her except that she does not want to be tied down to one person and likes to party. While this could be a fun character, it can also come with complications and sometimes danger. Plus, is there a reason why she wants to stay single?
Just a note: some sources say that Josslyn does not want to be committed to any one man, while another source says that she is a lesbian. Perhaps she is bisexual. We will have to wait for “Mistresses” to air to find out.
Karen is a therapist who ends up having an affair with a patient. When he dies, his son speaks to her, not knowing what she has done. As if the guilt of having an affair with a married man was not enough, she is now having to deal with the choice of either telling his son or keeping it hidden. There is also the possibility that she could lose her license.
April is a widow and has a 10-year-old. After she receives the money from her husband’s life insurance policy, she decides to open up a business, but then things start to get weird. She begins receiving prank phone calls and sees her husband everywhere, only to watch him vanish. She becomes convinced that he is alive, but is it just her mind playing tricks on her?
To make things even more emotional for her, a woman comes to her door to announce that she was having an affair with April’s husband. She tells her that she was pregnant when he died. Even though it has been a few years since his death, it is a shock and every emotion you can think of is expressed… anger, sadness, shock… how she deals with the information and what the woman wants is yet to be seen. Does she want part of the life insurance money? Is she the one who has been playing mind games with April?
“Mistresses” is not about woman sleeping with married men without a care in the world. It isn’t even an updated “Sex and the City.” It’s about four different women, each on a different path in life with their own complications, problems and joys. It’s about how true friendships bond women together through even the most scandalous times. To be brutally honest, there is a little bit of April, Josslyn, Savi or Karen in all of us, which is why it will likely get our attention and capture our hearts.
