People can give Zumba a try at the Canfield Community Center tomorrow evening, and sign up for summer sessions in that dance fitness system at that same site (1801 N. Beech Daly in Dearborn Heights) if they like their experience.
Elements of Exercise invites anyone to join its Cinco de Mayo party from 6-7:30 p.m Friday at the Canfield Center. All they have to do (if they are unregistered students) is pay for a $10 ticket at the door, Elements of Exercise owner Kara Torres said, and they will get live music played by a deejay, as well as a raffle giving away health and fitness baskets and prizes Elements of Exercise.
Eight certified Zumba instructors will be able to handle any crowd drawn to the 1.5-hour class with Mexican-themed dances and music, Torres emphasized. There will also be light healthy refreshments at the event.
“We will also do signing up for our classes on-site that night,” Torres said. “The nice thing is if you’ve never tried Zumba before, and you find you like it, you can sign up for that at the party.
“The party at the Community Center is an example of how we can get people active in a fitness class based on Latin dancing,” she said.
Starting this month, Elements of Exercise and Dearborn Heights Parks and Recreation will be offering their eight-week Zumba Fitness summer sessions at Canfield. The May 14-July 2 and July 9-August 27 sessions will require a registration fee of $50 ($55 for non-residents). The 7:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday classes are for ages 12 and up, and participants are advised to bring a bottle of water and a towel “because you’ll be sure to work up a sweat!”
Those already signed up are still encouraged to join the Friday night party. However, Torres also advised that Elements of Exercise does have Zumba classes at sites other than Canfield (such as a class they are offering at the Berwyn Senior Citizen Center for active seniors, for example), and at the Cinco de Mayo party “our registration will be open for those classes as well.”
Even if people should miss the May 3 party, Torres confirmed they can still register for the summer sessions by calling (888) 363-3635, or by going to the www.elementsofexercise.com website. Even while the sessions are underway, there will still be on-going registration for these Zumba Fitness classes ($10 is the special rate for a drop-in class). In the two years since Elements of Exercise opened its Dearborn building, Torres said, its Dearborn Heights Zumba Fitness classes have certainly grown.
ZUMBA® is a fusion of Latin and International music and dance themes that create a fun fitness system. The routines feature aerobic/fitness-interval training, with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body.
