When the Anti’s start professing that it’s unreasonable for civilians to have military style weapons they purposefully leave out the important fact that these weapons are not the same as Mil-Spec. More importantly they state that local law enforcement is better equipped and trained to deal with personal protection and safety. The reality is that in most cases this is true but there are exceptions, many exceptions.
First case in point is the travesty of disarmament that took place after Hurricane Katrina. This has been well documented where local law enforcement went house to house disarming law abiding citizens “Gestapo” Style post Katrina. Unfortunately this set a horrible precedent.
To see first hand police state tactics and unlawful use of force on law abiding citizens post Katrina see video HERE! Be prepared… you will be PISSED OFF!!
What if the law enforcement officer is the problem or poses the risk to you as a law abiding citizen? Then What?
The Cato Institute has a National Police Misconduct Reporting Project. This site lists daily incidents of police and law enforcement officers who have violated policies and procedures across the country. Just yesterday on 20 May there were 11 incidents across the country!
Update: Harford County, Maryland (First reported 04-19-13): A deputy has resigned after pleading guilty to accepting payments in exchange for providing unauthorized access to police databases. Our job here is to gather news reports about police misconduct in America in a fair and unbiased way. Our primary objective is to study the scope of the problem and to identify policies that can minimize misconduct.
This site is hosted by the Cato Institute, the world’s leading libertarian think tank.
Flex Your Rights page has some great information on what to do if you feel you have been the victim or or mistreated by a law enforcement officer.
One does not have to go very far or dig too deep to find that there are lots of examples of law enforcement overreach and illegal activity. The below article is a recent example from New York City:
Gun-Dealing, Drug-Dealing, Child-Abusing, Torturing and Murdering of American Citizens by NYPD Officers has cost tax-payers $22,000,000 in One Year
City Shells Out $22 Million to Settle Civil Rights Cases Against NYPD
“These enormous settlements are a clear sign that police misconduct is a serious problem in New York City. Instead of wasting taxpayer dollars year after year, the city should be working hard to identify unlawful NYPD practices and out-of-control officers and instituting reforms to prevent misconduct before it happens,” Dunn said.
Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly have vigorously defended the department’s tactics, particularly stop-and-frisks, saying it keep guns off the street and is an effective policing tool in high-crime neighborhoods.
Bottom line is that despite the fact that most law enforcement officers are hard working and good people there is always that 10% that will abuse their Power & Authority! Being well armed and trained is vital to our nation’s security and to your family’s security. When natural disasters strike, first responders can’t be everywhere at once. There will always be areas that are isolated or triaged as not being as bad and as such will not be covered.
Regardless of your situation it is always best to be prepared to provide your own personal protection individually and on your own. Regardless of the risks of Police Misconduct the reality is that the Police may not be able to be there when they are needed most!
