The party continued in Milwaukee as Summerfest reached its third day yesterday, June 29, with Phil Vassar playing the Briggs & Stratton stage. Phil Vassar is a longtime Summerfest veteran, this being his twelfth consecutive year, and so it was no surprise that there was a large turnout for the country artist. Vassar is a singer, songwriter, and pianist who recently released his twenty-second single, “Love is Alive”. The Summerfest enthusiast played this new song as well as plenty of hits spanning his twenty-six years in the music industry.
Fans were packed in as close as they could get for the performance, holding up signs and chanting for Phil Vassar to perform. Their wait was answered by one of the longest concerts of the night, as Vassar continued to play his hits after many other performers had called it quits. This was all the better since the momentum of the performance only increased and became more energetic as the night went on. The concert began somewhat mellow and built to an all-out party as Vassar jumped on his piano, ran across the stage, and sang as many songs as possible.
While Vassar is well-established as a country artist, he included a little something for everybody. Although he is a very talented songwriter and with a wide selection of original work to chose from, he included songs like Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” and had band members perform rock hits like Rick Springfield’s “Jessie’s Girl” or Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline”. When told who was performing, an unfamiliar passerby commented, “It just looks like a massive party here!”, and stuck around for the remainder of the show even though he claimed he wasn’t a country fan.
Had Vassar been on a stage that allowed him to be closer to his fans, he would have been unstoppable. In past Summerfest concerts, Vassar was able to reach out to give high fives or grab fans’ hands, but venue logistics didn’t allow for it this time. Nonetheless, fans were overjoyed to even be towards the back of the large crowd to hear him perform.
