After decades fronting some of the fiercest heavy metal bands on the planet, the mighty Philip H. Anselmo will be bringing his solo band and music to the Best Buy Theater on Friday, August 16.
While Phil’s band Down regularly plays Best Buy every year (read my review of last year’s show by clicking here), this tour will be the first-ever live shows featuring his solo material, recorded as Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals.
I spoke with Phil in Las Vegas earlier this year (complete interview here), and he all but confirmed the just-announced tour, expressing his excitement for this new stage in his music. He also threw water on any possibility of Pantera, Down, Superjoint Ritual, or other songs from his career entering the setlist:
Examiner: I think the number one burning question for everyone right now, hearing this new split and Phil, your solo stuff, is will there be a solo Phil Anselmo tour?
Philip: It’s very possible, but I won’t say yes because I just don’t want to mislead anybody. Right now I’m concentrating on Down, and waiting on that new Warbeast, and one thing at a time.
Examiner: Hypothetically then, what would a solo Phil Anselmo setlist look like?
Philip: Just the new stuff that I do.
Examiner: No Down…
Philip: Oh god no, that’s for Down. Down still exists, and as far as any other bands I’ve been in, it’s like I don’t want to mess with that legacy. There’s already chapters written, it’s time for a new chapter. Time for a new history to be written.
But even without classic Pantera favorites, Phil’s solo show promises to be a headbanging delight for New York metalheads. The 8 tracks of Walk Through Exits Only, due to be released mid-July, are raw, ear-rattling, face-melting musical brutality and anyone who has ever seen Phil on stage knows that the singer is one of music’s all-time best frontmen, electrifying crowds with his sledgehammer vocals and bulldozer personality.
The August show adds a thundering kick to a month already featuring Black Sabbath, Megadeth, and a pair of Alice in Chains concerts, making the tail end of summer a heavy metal wet dream for the tri-state region.
Tickets are priced at a very reasonable $30, and go on sale this Friday. Support will include Phil’s favorite tourmates, Warbeast, who have been opening for Down on their last several runs.
