Most people recycle at least a little, while others may consider themselves to be recycling fools. But the Plastics Make it Possible website sponsored by the American Chemistry Council believes that there might be a lot of plastic in one room of the house that doesn’t end up in the recycling bin. In an effort to educate the public and get more plastic out of landfills and into recycling bins, the website is running a campaign called Bathroom to Bin. Everyone who takes a look at the interactive page can then enter a drawing for a $500 American Express gift card.
The user-friendly page features a bathroom cabinet filled with common items such as mouthwash, cough syrup, toothbrushes and more. When the cursor is placed over one of the items, information about the type of plastic used to make that container pops up. Info about what the plastic is used for after being recycled is also included. Who knew body lotion bottles is often turned into plastic patio furniture? Or that plastic hair spray bottles have a second life as industrial drainage pipe?
Here are a few of the other items included on the Bathroom to Bin page.
- Shampoo bottles are made from the same type of plastic as milk jugs
- Plastic bags that hold items like cotton balls can be recycled along with plastic shopping bags
- Some toothbrush manufacturers want your old toothbrushes to turn into other plastic stuff
- Liquid medicine bottles are turned into all sorts of wearable items
- Even containers that hold pain medicines are recyclable
So what are you waiting for? Visit the Plastics Make it Possible page, learn some new info, fill out the entry form and the next time a plastic container gets emptied in the bathroom, toss it in the recycling can instead of the trash can!

Those pain killers sure come in handy when you have a headache or upset stomach. Don’t toss the bottle when it’s empty, though. It can be remade into new bottles for similar items.
Body spray helps the wearer to smell good. But when the bottle is empty, tossing it in the trash just trashes the planet. Turn it in to be recycled and help keep landfills from overflowing.
Those pump bottles of hairspray make sure to keep styles in place, but the place for empty bottles is not the trash can. Make sure to recycle the empties and they can be used to make flower pots and drainage pipes.
