On July 22nd, Wizards of the Coast kicked off their “Magic 2014” Core Set League.
If you haven’t done so yet, now is the best opportunity to join in on the fun since the league is only over a week old. All you have to do is find a participating local gaming store and sign up. Entrance fees may vary due to prizes that may be given out at the end of the league season.
So how does the league work? When you sign up you’ll get six booster packs to build a, minimum, 40-card deck. Once you’ve finished building your deck, you’ll have from, literally, Monday and the rest of the week to complete five matches with other players in the league. You get two points for a win and one point for a loss. At the end of the season, which is on August 26th, all of the points are tallied and prizes are given out.
One of the participating game stores in the South Shore area is Battleground Games & Hobbies. Entrance into the league will cost you $30, and here is a short rundown as to what you will receive:
· Six Magic 2014 booster packs
· One pack of 50 count sleeves
· One small deck box to hold all of your cards
· A limited edition Battleground Games & Hobbies play mat (limited to the first 40 people who sign up)
· A league promo Sliver token
· A DCI registration number (if needed)
In addition to what you will receive, at the beginning of each week participants will be allowed to purchase up to two additional booster packs in which they can add any of those cards to their deck.
If you are new or thinking about getting into “Magic: The Gathering”, this is one of the best times to do so. The league is a very casual format and is for fun. One of the best things about the league is that experienced players love it as well, and therefore makes for an excellent learning experience.
For more information about the league then you can check out the official site for Magic: The Gathering or check out a participating local game store. Here is the link to the information regarding the league at Battleground Games & Hobbies.
