In a letter dated Tuesday, Franklin Graham expressed his unhappiness that the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association(BGEA) and Samaritans Purse were targeted for audits. Although they passed the audits with flying colors and retained their tax-exempt status, the audits are being seen as politically motivated by Graham and those at BGEA and Samaritans Purse.
“Franklin Graham says the audits, which ‘wasted’ ministry time and money, were not ‘coincidence’ or ‘justifiable’,” according to the famous blog.christianitytoday.com.
BGEA ran national adds in Franklin Graham’s name during the election against Obama and according to al.com, “Graham believes they were targeted for their conservative stance against gay marriage.”
These two organizations and the Grahams have never hidden their beliefs on Biblical principles such as marriage as being between a man and a woman and also their support of Israel. Obama and the liberals are being accused of targeting not-for-profit groups with conservative voices, which also include some Tea Party affiliates which are targeted for their patriotic stance.
Graham indicated in the letter, “This is morally wrong and unethical—indeed some would call it ‘un-American’.” He was referring to the wasting of taxpayers money as well as money contributed by donors to BGEA and Samaritans Purse.
So, yet again, Franklin Graham stands up for his beliefs, which is much more than many so-called “Christians” ever do. Even at the risk of receiving criticism for his strong stand, he stood firm on what he believes is morally right. If only Christians would stand up for what they believe in half as strongly as the Grahams are currently doing, America might just stand a chance of turning back to God.
Questions of Graham turning political are also being heard in the circles of criticism. Standing up for ones rights and beliefs is not like a “bad word” or a “bad deed”. Standing for what is right for your nation is not “un-Christian” either. “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.” (Colossians 3:23-24) If only more Christians would stand up for what is morally right in the sight of God, the voice of truth could be heard.
Do you think it is right for conservative groups including Christian non-profit organizations to be targeted for audits and threatened that they may lose their non-profit status simply for being conservative or patriotic? Would you back Franklin Graham for standing up to Obama on this matter?
