On May 9, 2013, a crowd of military mothers and grandmothers were pleasantly stunned when Prince Harry, 28, showed up to the White House for a visit, according to USA Today.
First Lady Michelle Obama was hosting a tea party for military families and proclaimed, “Well, surprise!” as Harry walked in to women and children cheering his arrival.
According to USA Today, the prince is in the United States to raise money for charity, praise wounded veterans, and promote his home country of Britain.
Upon his arrival, he paid a visit to Capitol Hill along with Sen. John McCain to view an exhibit on land mine clearing, something his mother Princess Diana championed.
Harry then went to the White House to join a party put on by Joining Forces honoring military families.
The first lady told those in attendance, “Prince Harry wanted to be here to personally thank you for your service.”
While in the states for the next few days, Harry will visit Arlington National Cemetery and meet with wounded veterans at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He will then head to Colorado to support veterans participating in the Warrior Games. Next, the prince will visit with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to promote British tourism and view the damage done to the state by Hurricane Sandy. Finally, he will be part of a charity fundraiser in New York and subsequently play in a polo match in Connecticut in an effort to raise money for his African children’s charity, reports USA Today.
