Forecast discussion: A strong high pressure system out in the Atlantic will continue to give us hot temperatures and high humidity throughout the week. We will not see any relief from this weather until late Friday or early Saturday.
At this time, a strong high pressure system north of Bermuda continues to bring tropical moisture over Southern New England. This will keep our dewpoint temperatures quite high and make the air feel oppressive. Providence had its second straight day of temperatures above 90 degrees. By tomorrow, if we reach or go over 90, we will have our second official heat wave of the summer. However, this heat wave may last a lot longer. Due to heat index temperatures to be near 100 once again, the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for most of Rhode Island.
The computer models suggest that we will see a slight increase in a chance for some showers and thunderstorms each day. However, the most realistic chance of seeing some precipitation may not be until Thursday morning. As we approach the weekend, a cold front coming down from Canada will bring a little cooler air, and this air mass will meet with the hot, tropical air over us now. This smashing of air masses may help create some strong or even severe weather as we move through Friday evening and early Saturday morning.
The front will finally pass south of Southern New England by Sunday morning, so we will see the risk of showers and thunderstorms until Sunday afternoon. A new high pressure system will control our weather pattern late Sunday, and it will help bring drier air. So, the humidity will come down, and temperatures will actually become more comfortable, with highs only in the lower to middle 80’s.
