Forecast discussion: After a few weeks of high humidity over Rhode Island, a passing cold front will help lower our dewpoint temperatures for the next few days. But, the cold front will return and increase our humidity before the weekend.
At the moment, a cold front extends just over Chatham, MA, and slowly moving offshore. After a few weeks of having dewpoints in the upper 60’s and lower 70’s, this temperature will drop into the 50’s for the next couple of days. It will make the air much more comfortable, and we may even give our air conditioners a little rest. Also, temperatures are going to be below normal for late July. This is due to the cold front once again. Despite the front moving offshore, it will stall and linger near Southern New England. The result is cloudy skies and possible showers and periods of rain, as a low pressure center develops over the DelMarva Peninsula tonight. This low will help bring the moisture up into the region through early Friday afternoon.
By this time, the front will be moving offshore once again, but will continue moving into the Atlantic. However, we will see more clouds move over the area Saturday night, as we await a slow moving cold front. The front will help bring more showers and isolated thunderstorms by early Sunday morning. The front will eventually move offshore by Monday afternoon, before a strong high pressure system brings drier weather into the middle of next week. Temperatures will slowly climb into the lower to middle 80’s by Saturday, with lows in the middle to upper 60’s.
Finally, Tropical Storm Dorian formed in the eastern Caribbean earlier today. As of 5 p.m. EDT, Dorian was centered at 14.6N 31.4W, or about 505 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands. Maximum sustained winds are at 50 mph with gusts of 65 mph, and is moving west-northwest at 20 mph. The system is expected to move over cooler waters over the next 24 hours, so the system will weaken slightly. However, it will eventually move over warmer waters Friday afternoon, and slowly intensify. By Sunday evening, Dorian is expected to be northeast of Puerto Rico.
