Forecast discussion: After a delightful day of sunshine on Tuesday, Providence will be going from perfect spring weather to the middle of summer in the next few days.
As we move through this evening, we are awaiting a frontal boundary moving northward from the Mid-Atlantic. This warm front will be passing through the state by tomorrow afternoon. But, this front will bring scattered showers and some possible thunderstorms this evening, and through the morning and early afternoon. We will have several hours of dry weather, but the computer models are suggesting another isolated thunderstorm Wednesday night into early Thursday morning.
Once the showers and thunderstorms move northward, it will begin to feel more like August than the end of May. Warmer, tropical air from the south will move into Southern New England, and we will feel its force, starting on Thursday. Temperatures inland will reach 90 degrees, although you will find some relief along the coastline, as temperatures stay in the upper 70’s to lower 80’s. However, ocean temperatures are only in the middle 50’s, so it will be chilly if you take a dip at the local beach.
We may see a possible heat wave of three straight days of 90 degree temperatures through Saturday. We will begin to see some relief from the heat by Sunday, as a new cold front will slowly move into the Mid-Atlantic. The front will be slow moving, so we will see showers and periods of rain into Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures will drop back into the middle 70’s by Monday. We will see partial clearing by Tuesday, as high pressure begins to dry our skies by the middle of next week.
