Forecast discussion: Looking at the latest radar imagery, a line of strong thunderstorms have passed Pittsfield, MA and is moving to the east-southeast. The thunderstorms will weaken before getting to Rhode Island, but some areas may see some lightning, small hail and some heavy rainfall for a short period of time. I am expecting all precipitation to end around 3 a.m. in the morning.
The thunderstorms are associated with a strong warm front, which has passed north of Southern New England. Behind this front is extremely tropical, humid air, which will bring our temperatures up into the upper 80’s and lower 90’s on Thursday. An Air Quality Alert will be issued from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. Thursday for the southern coast of the state. This hot weather will continue into the weekend, although temperatures will cool into the lower 80’s on Sunday. With the possibility of seeing 90 degrees three straight days in a row, this would be the first heat wave for Providence since July 16-18 of last year.
The cooler air will be ahead of a cold front, which is creating tornadoes through the Central Plains. This cold front will slowly move into Rhode Island early Monday, but we will see some showers developing ahead of the front on Sunday evening. I’m expecting some good rainfall for Monday, before the front slowly moves offshore Tuesday morning. We will remain with some leftover clouds on Tuesday, as the cold front will be located off the coastline. Temperatures will actually be below normal by Monday.
