Forecast discussion: Like an old Glenn Frey song, the heat was on in Providence, and the entire state of Rhode Island, on Thursday. Humid, tropical air moved into the state this afternoon, and it will remain with us throughout the next few days.
A strong high pressure system out in the Atlantic is giving us southwest winds, which is helping to bring this air mass up into New England. We will remain with west-southwest winds tomorrow, and temperatures will reach the lower 90’s inland. Due to the heat, an Air Quality Alert will be in effect for all of Rhode Island Friday from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. We did reach a high of 90 degrees at T.F. Green Airport in Warwick today, so we will have to see if we develop a heat wave. The south coast will be cooler, thanks to the onshore breeze. Temperatures are expected to reach the lower 80’s.
Right now, the computer models give Providence highs in the upper 80’s on Saturday, so we may not see a heat wave. But, it will still be humid, so please take precautions if you have to be outside working in this heat. Please keep drinking plenty of fluids, and take short breaks while working, preferably in a shaded area.
By Sunday, a cold front that has spawned more tornadoes today in the Central Plains will begin to move eastward. We should see limited sunshine throughout most of the day, but I am expecting showers to develop around sunset. Some areas may see heavy periods of rainfall during the overnight.
The front will push through by Monday evening, and will slowly move offshore on Tuesday. We may see some lingering clouds throughout the day, as the high in the Atlantic slows down the movement of the cold front. A new high pressure system out of Canada will help bring back drier air over us, as well as return us back to seasonable temperatures. Highs will be in the middle 70’s from Tuesday until Thursday.
