Before every wrestling event, whether it be WWE or TNA or even your local promotion running at a gym or VFW hall, a warning is announced to fans not to throw things at the wrestlers and definitely not to touch them. One fan in South Africa must have missed that memo.
During Tuesday’s WWE live event, a fan at the event slid into the ring and attacked Randy Orton during his entrance. As Orton was standing on the turnbuckle posing for the fans, the fan snuck up behind him and delivered a low blow that knocked him to the mat. This took place just moments before his scheduled match against Big E. Langston.
Ringside security and WWE officials dragged the fan out of the ring, but not before Orton could get a parting shot with a kick to his head. After things had calmed down, Orton then kicked the Money In The Bank briefcase to the entrance ramp and flashed his middle finger.
There was a special meet-and-great with the WWE superstars scheduled after the event, but it was canceled due to what had happened in the seconds prior to Orton’s match. WWE issued a statement about the situation not long after it happened.
Tonight Randy Orton was violently attacked from behind by a South African fan, who is currently being held in jail pending criminal charges. The extent of Orton’s injuries are unknown at this time.
At 10:30 P.M. Central, it was revealed that Orton had not sustained any injuries other than just being knocked out of breath after the groin shot. After the event, Big E. Langston took to his Twitter page, and offered his comment on the situation.
That’s not exactly what we mean by “intimate fan experience” #WWECapeTown
It has widely been known throughout the world of wrestling that if a fan becomes involved, he can often become fair game for any wrestler in the ring. This is why warnings are given prior to the event, to keep fans safe and so everyone can enjoy the event. Things could’ve turned out a lot worse if Orton had not been caught off guard.
As a side note, fans can watch Orton this coming Friday night on WWE “Friday Night SmackDown!,” which was taped at the Toyota Center in Houston this past Thursday night. He will be in action, along with Christian, Rob Van Dam, CM Punk, and World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio. It will air on SyFy, so make sure to check your local listings. Spoilers will NOT be posted here, out of respect to those that want to enjoy the program.
