Even Hollywood’s finest and most beloved personalities aren’t immune from public reputation snafus.
In Hollywood these days, it seems that everyone could use a crash course in both offline and online reputation management. Public personalities with reputation and image issues include Lindsay Lohan, Gary Busey, Jeremy London, Mel Gibson and more.
Actor Gary Busey’s reputation took a major hit in 2008 when many of his formerly contained demons were brought up on the hit television reality series Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew. Busey, who was originally slated to mentor other downtrodden pseudo-celebrities, exhibited behavior that immediately made it clear he was better suited as a patient. Gary Busey’s incoherent rants and more-than-eccentric personality actually stem from a 1988 motorcycle accident. Despite the reason behind his behavior, his lack of an internal filter along with his very visible lifestyle have made him a target of media satirists across the globe.
Lindsay Lohan could have been one of Disney’s most profitable faces. However, Lohan sabotaged her own career in its prime. Lindsay Lohan’s reputation as a squeaky clean but G-rated “Mean Girl” took a nosedive after several DUI arrests. Even into 2012, Lohan continued drinking and faced a number of other legal issues. She was charged with third-degree assault after being arrested for hitting a woman at a nightclub, she was rushed to an emergency room in Los Angeles after a collision with an 18-wheeler, and she was even publicly belittled by a member of the Backstreet Boys.
Mel Gibson’s reputation has changed quite a bit since his Mad Max and Braveheart days. An older, and slightly darker, Mel Gibson was arrested in 2006 on suspicion of drunk driving. Once cuffed, Gibson began spewing hate-filled statements at the arresting officer. A video recording from the precinct captures Gibson making unnecessary sexually charged comments to a female officer, damaging his reputation even further. Gibson has additionally been accused of homophobia, anti-Semitism, domestic violence and racism. One of Gibson’s biggest fans, fellow actor and friend Robert Downey Jr. (who is not without his own past reputation crises), made a plea on Gibson’s behalf to forgive his indiscretions. The jury is still out on whether this very public praise of the actor has done anything to better his overall reputation.
Jeremy and Jason London
Brothers Jeremy and Jason London were once a Hollywood powerhouse fraternity. However, Jeremy’s reputation took a hit after a 2010 incident where the actor was allegedly taken at gunpoint and forced to joyride while consuming narcotics. Though his family claimed the incident was fabricated by a desperate London, the actor maintained that he was not a willing participant. One man was later arrested and admitted to kidnapping London at gunpoint. Despite this arrest, many still believe that London simply made it up as a publicity stunt. Twin brother Jason has also been in the news for less-than-flattering reasons. The Dazed and Confused star is now known mostly for an inability to control his bowels under duress.
What these celebrities and others have in common is that their names have all been associated with widespread negative publicity. They could all benefit from a proactive online reputation management campaign. Experienced online reputation companies such as Reputation Advocate have the training and insight necessary to carry out these advanced strategies.
