In addition to Rep. Kelly’s keynote address, six individuals and organizations distinguished as fighters for justice were honored for their work:
Camilla Taylor, Marriage Project Director for Lambda Legal, received the Legal Eagle Award for filing suit challenging laws in Iowa and Illinois which bar marriage equality.
Fifth Ward Alderman Leslie Hairston was this year’s recipient of the Leon Despres Award, bestowed upon elected officials who consistently demonstrate independent leadership, for her many years of fighting for transparency and community involvement in government, in pursuance of reform and social justice.
The Barbara Merrill-Rudy Lozano Labor Award went to Arise Chicago, a coalition of labor and faith-based organizations working for fair wages and worker rights.
The Harold Washington Award, established to honor those who work to bring together diverse communities toward a common goal, was bestowed upon Raise Your Hand, a statewide organization of concerned parents who have been leaders in the fight against school closings and in favor of quality education and more local control of our schools.
UVote Project, a model program created by students at Northwestern University to register students to vote, and which has been successfully replicated at numerous campuses throughout the country, was the recipient of this year’s Kit Pfau Voting Rights Award.
Finally, the Saul Mendelson Social Justice Award was bestowed upon Jane Ramsey, who retired last year as Executive Director of the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs, after leading that organization’s efforts to fight poverty and discrimination and to build bridges between diverse religious and ethnic communities.
