The Wizard World Philadelphia Comic Con returns to the Pennsylvania Convention Center this week, May 30-June 2. Wizard World Philly is the area’s biggest pop culture convention and features many celebrity appearances, comic book publishers, writers and artists and a large variety of programming.
This year’s event showcases a number of popular reunions including a “Firefly”/”Serenity” one with Summer Glau, Adam Baldwin, Gina Torres and Jewel Staite. Unfortunately, Nathan Fillion had to cancel his scheduled appearance due to a scheduling conflict.
Another gathering of stars from a past TV favorite, “Charmed,” will also be in attendance, including Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs and Brian Krause. Visit Philly’s own Zenescope Entertainment at Booth 417 and complete the “Charmed” experience by checking out their official comics based on the TV series.
Marvel Entertainment reunites with Wizard World after being absent from the convention the last couple years. Marvel’s return gives a much needed shot of “comics” to this Comic Con with two panels, “MARVEL: Breaking Into Comics the Marvel Way” and “MARVEL: From NOW! to Infinity.” The latter is hosted by Marvel editor and Drexel University alum, Tom Brennan, as well as Jake Thomas, Phil Noto, Khoi Pham, Leinil Yu and C.B. Cebulski. Cebulski will also be holding portfolio reviews. Famed former Marvel creator, Stan Lee will be participating in a Q&A event. Other comic book creators scheduled to appear include: Bryan Hitch, Salvador Larroca, Bob Layton, Yildiray Cinar, Barry Kitson, Mico Suayan, Julian Totino Tedesco, Angel Unzueta, Michael Golden, Greg Horn and J.G. Jones, among many others.
Norman Reedus will join former “The Walking Dead” co-stars John Bernthal and Michael Rooker. Reedus, by far, had the longest line on Sunday of last year’s event. Speaking of “The Walking Dead,” all paid attendees will receive a special edition of “The Walking Dead” #1 with a cover by Eisner Award nominee Julian Totino Tedesco. Fans can also expect to see “Arrow” regulars John Barrowman and Manu Bennett.
William Shatner rounds out this year’s headline guests. WWE Superstar Daniel Bryan (also known to Philly fans as “The American Dragon” Bryan Danielson) and WWE Hall of Famer Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat will be on hand for a Q&A and more. WWE Champion John Cena will also be at the show.
While in attendance, be sure to be on the look out for these members of the Philadelphia area comics scene:
John Still (Booth 2069): Creator of the “Synergy” comic. Still will also have Boba Fett and The Maxx prints available.
Marc Lombardi, Editor and Assistant Art Director of Grayhaven Comics, will be scouting in Artists Alley for potential contributors to their “The Gathering” anthology. Follow @marclombardi on Twitter, so you know who to look out for.
Wizard World Philadelphia Comic Con will be at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, in Center City Philadelphia, this May 30-June 2. For a full list of scheduled programming and on what days which guests will be appearing, visit www.wizardworld.com/home-pa.html.
