“It’s midnight somewhere!” the promotional material reads breathlessly for the new Kahlua Midnight. Introduced last November, the product blends traditional Kahlua coffee liqueur with silver rum for, what the brand hopes, will be a move into nightlife shot drinking.
Long before The Dude abided, Kahlua had made its mark with Black Russians (2 parts Kahlua, 1 part vodka) and White Russians (add cream or milk). It also shows up in creamy, girly cocktails at poolside bars. With Midnight, the brand hopes to make a mark on nightclubs with an iced shot drink. The addition of rum to the Mexican Arabica coffee-based sweetened liqueur means you’ve got a drink-in-a-glass ready for chilling and serving.
The juice is bold and clean, and definitely worth drinking on its own. Coffee notes are somehow more pronounced with the addition of the rum, and the rum brightens and balances the liqueur aspect of the liquid. Over ice or chilled, Midnight is indeed an enjoyable sweetened shot. At 35% ABV (70 proof) it’s nearly at full spirit strength on its own. Adding vodka or tequila enhances the experience, but be careful: You now have a strong drink on your hands! Or top with cream or milk for an inviting near-White Russian with a slightly lower alcohol content.
Will Midnight take off after midnight? It still gives the impression of being richer and thicker than most nightclub-targeted liqueurs (think Le Sutra or Hypnotique), but it’s got the kick (from both the higher proof and the coffee) that might encourage a few celebratory rounds of shots (followed by an orange wedge, the company recommends) before discovering what the rest of the night has to offer. At the moment, we’re particularly fond of it blended with Iceberg Chocolate Mint vodka and a little cream for a new take on a Grasshopper-inspired cocktail (recipe below).
Kahlua Midnight, a blend of coffee liqueur and rum, has an ABV of 35% (70 proof). It is available nation-wide at a suggested retail price of $24.
