June 29, the New England Revolution equalized Chivas USA 1-1 at the StubHub Center for a small crowd of 7,319, thanks to a late equalizer by late substitute Chad Barrett.
“Chad [Barrett] came in and changed the game,” said Revolution head coach Jay Heaps. “I thought he has done a good job before, he really changed the dynamic, his touch was on, and he moved well.”
Barrett replaced luckless striker Jerry Bengtson in the 83rd minute and scored five minutes after, assisted by Diego Fagundez and rookie Scott Caldwell, for his second goal of the season. It was Fagundez’s fourth assist this year and the young forward is now second on the team in assists, trailing Kelyn Rowe with five.
The Revolution (5-5-6, 21 pts.) now stand sixth in the Eastern Conference and 12th overall. Chivas (3-10-3, 12 pts.) snapped a seven-game losing streak with the draw, but are winless in 11 games (0-9-2) and 17th in MLS.
Former Chivas USA forward Juan Agudelo sprained his knee in the this week’s Open Cup loss to D.C. United and was unavailable for the line-up and right back Andrew Farrell was on a red card suspension. Midfielder Ryan Guy started as right back and struggled throughout the game.
Although many of the home team’s shots went far afield from the net, Laurent Courtois put the ball past goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth in the 18th minute, giving Chivas a 1-0 lead.
The Revolution began the second half more aggressively and put six shots on target in the second half, with good attempts by Chris Tierney, Fagundez and Stephen McCarthy.
The Revolution next host San Jose Earthquakes at Gillette Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 6.
