A fair bit of drama swirled during The Real Housewives of New Jersey Season 5 (which just wrapped up for the year), but it was nothing compared to watching real life play out in real time this week!
After being indicted on a litany of fraud and conspiracy charges Monday, one Bravo couple had to post $500,000 bond each (that’s a million dollars, sports fans) and surrender their passports at their Tuesday court appearance. Guess who?
It was none other than Teresa Giudice and her husband Joe who helped prove that truth is even stranger than fictionalized-reality when news broke that they could be headed to the slammer instead of the Jersey Shore next summer due to some still-developing and very serious-sounding legal woes.
Real Housewives of New Jersey Stars Teresa, Joe Giudice Could Face LIFE in Prison
Teresa Giudice, one of Bravo’s biggest, loudest divas, and her scroungy, skeevy hubby were ordered not to travel beyond New Jersey and New York after being formally indicted on 39 separate charges by a grand jury Monday. The charges include accusations of bank fraud and numerous related crimes such as lying on mortgage applications and bankruptcy documents.
Some of the charges, including conspiracy to commit mail fraud, could carry penalties of 20 to 30 years in prison, perhaps more in some cases. In total, the couple faces “hundreds of years in jail”, says a source, though penalties in cases like this are often consolidated into more reasonable sentences due to federal sentencing guidelines.
However, if convicted, Italian-born Joe Giudice could be deported back to Italy, adding yet another layer of concern for the Giudice family.
Teresa released a statement on Monday ahead of her and Joe’s Tuesday court appearance. “Today is a most difficult day for our family. I support Joe and, as a wonderful husband and father, I know he wants only the best for our lovely daughters and me. I am committed to my family and intend to maintain our lives in the best way possible, which includes continuing my career. As a result, I am hopeful that we will resolve this matter with the Government as quickly as possible.”
Teresa and Joe are expected to plead not guilty to all charges, according to their attorneys. There will be an arraignment hearing on August 14, so stay tuned. The Real Housewives of New Jersey Season 5 may be over, but it seems there will at least be plenty of Giudice drama to tide fans over until Season 6!
(Our most sincere concerns go out to Teresa and Joe’s four little girls. We felt sorry enough for them before, but this goes far beyond that.)
