Rida Kahn is a shining star in the fashion industry and the CEO of Zee Portal and Zee Report. All of her experiences in the field of public relations, media, and marketing have led her to open her own Fashion PR company called Black Media. Who is this fabulous creature and how does she do it all? Read her latest interview to find out what she says about her work, her life, upcoming projects, and the advice she has for up-and-coming shining stars.
How did you get your start in the fashion industry?
Believe it or not, I started by importing and selling bathrobes from Turkey – running operations from a basement.
I would assume any designer would be jumping at the opportunity to work with you. What can a potential client of Black Media expect from your expertise and do you ever have to turn clients away?
Clients of Black Media can expect to receive the same insight, industry analysis, industry connections as myself, along with top of the line PR services. Yes, we often have to turn clients away – most of it is because we can only offer our services to so many designers and sometimes because the brand is not ready for PR yet.
With so many people vehemently vying for top level positions in the fashion industry, how does someone climb their way up and stand out from the crowd? Do you have advice for someone aspiring for that executive position at a large fashion firm?
It is very hard and almost impossible. Sometimes I myself feel as if I am dreaming. This industry is more brutal and cut throat than portrayed in “The Devil Wears Prada.” However, I strongly believe that nothing is impossible and perhaps that is the secret. Also you have to be on a constant ladder to climb – literally every opportunity you get. Learn to market yourself and market what your strengths are. You really have to work hard to come in the limelight but always know what sets you apart from others and highlight it. Send emails to executives and tell them what you would do different.
Is there anything you have not done yet that you aspire to do in the future? Any upcoming projects on the horizon?
I am on a constant ladder, so I keep on indulging myself in new projects. At the moment we are in the process of filming a show called Style TV and it will be on HLN and Lifetime start fall 2014. It is all about fashion industry. I am the executive producer so very psyched about the project!
Most people have a dual personality (i.e. a driven, career-focused side dueling with a softer, artistic side). It is normal for one side to win against the other in life while burrowed in the psyche is something completely different waiting patiently to spring out when given the chance. What would someone be surprised to know about Rida Kahn?
That is true! I think I am aware of my both sides. One is very driven, intense and career-focused whereas the other is very mild, laid back, and even borderline lazy!
