Fireworks were a nice exclamation to a 5-game sweep, as the Quad Cities River Bandits took care of the Clinton LumberKings. Leading up to the series’ finale, the River Bandits took care of business of the LumberKings by defeating them by the scores of 6-1, 4-1, 9-8, and 7-6 before finishing off the LumberKings 1-0.
Carlos Correa (SS) had half of the River Bandits’ hits with 2, including a double. Terrell Joyce (RF) scored the only run of the game when, in the 7th inning, Joyce reached on a throwing error, moved to 2nd on Rio Ruiz’s (3B) ground out, moved to third on Austin Elkins’ (2B) ground out, and then scored on a balk by LumberKings’ pitcher Richard Vargas (0-1, 5.79 ERA). The River Bandits stranded 8 runners during the game.
Vincent Velasquez held the LumberKings to 1 hit and no runs over 6 innings of work, which included 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. Gerardo Sanchez (4-1, 5.01 ERA) put in 2 more innings, and also gave up only 1 hit and no runs, while striking out 1. Chia-Jen Lo picked up his 1st save in his 1st appearance as a River Bandit, even though his inning didn’t go smooth. Lo allowed a single to the 1st batter, got the 2nd batter to fly out, then walked the 3rd batter. After a fielder’s choice force out at 2nd with the next batter, the LumberKings had runners at first and third with 2 outs, but Lo was able to get the final batter to ground to Elkins, who stepped on 2nd for the final out.
The 5-game winning streak brought the River Bandits to 10-3 for the 2nd half of the season, which puts them only 1 game behind the leaders – Cedar Rapids Kernels and Beloit Snappers, who are tied for first. River Bandits team leaders are below:
