Rona Newton-John, older sister of singer Olivia-Newton John has died at the age of 70 from brain cancer according to Newsmax reports on Thursday, May 30.
“Grease” star Olivia-Newton John stated that her sister who was also an actress and singer was diagnosed with brain cancer in April and passed away last Friday.
Olivia took to Facebook to share her sad news with fans writing;
“My beautiful sister Rona sadly passed,” Olivia Newton-John wrote on her Facebook page on Wednesday. “Rona died of a very aggressive brain tumor and mercifully suffered no pain. She was surrounded by the love of her four children – Fiona, Brett,Tottie and Emerson and, her wonderful friends.”
“I will miss her forever – my beautiful, smart, talented, funny, brave sister Rona,” the 64-year-old actress added.
Olivia Newton-John is no stranger to cancer, a cancer survivor herself, Olivia battled the ugly disease 20-years ago and had been very supportive of her sister Rona Newton-John throughout her illness, postponing her Las Vegas show last April to spend time with her ailing sister.
“As a cancer ‘thriver’ myself, as many people are, I am very aware of the importance of love, support and family during this journey she is about to begin,” Newton-John said when she first shared her sister’s diagnosis last month.
Olivia Newton- John had the great pleasure of spending a lot of time with her sister Rona Newton-John on the set of the 1978 classic film musical “Grease” where she co-starred with John Travolta. This is where her sister met and then later married actor the late Jeff Conaway.
Jeff Conaway died in 2011 from complications related to pneumonia and a degenerative brain condition. Rona Newton-John and Jeff Conaway were married for five years and share a son, Emmerson, 38, who is presently a race car driver.
Rona Newton-John was later married a second time to Melbourne restaurant and nightclub owner Brian Goldsmith.
Rona Newton-John is best known as a model and actress, who had a recurring role on the internationally popular British comedy series “The Benny Hill Show.”
During her illness Rona had been penning a memoir entitled “The Dark Side of Charisma.” The book is scheduled for release late this summer.
In Rona Newton-John’s memory Olivia Newton-John states that she will start a brain tumor wellness program at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer & Wellness Centre.
In November of 2012 Olivia Newton-John teamed with close pal John Travolta for a charity album “This Christmas,” where they portrayed their “Grease” characters Danny and Sandy years later.
The proceeds all went to charitable foundations The Olivia Newton-John Cancer & Wellness Centre and the Jett Travolta Foundation. Artists featured on the album include: Barbra Streisand, James Taylor, Chick Corea, Kenny G, Tony Bennett, Cliff Richard and the Count Basie Orchestra.
Olivia Newton-John is scheduled to begin her residency at the Flamingo Las Vegas in Summer 2013.
