Most tennis fans and enthusiasts present at the Sandy Springs Tennis Center, just north of Atlanta weren’t talking Laura Patterson coming into play this week at the USTA Southern’s U.S. Open National Playoffs this week.
That changed, as the 16-year old Patterson pulled off what most would consider her second consecutive upset on Tuesday as she outlasted Georgia Tech player Kendal Woodard 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 to advance to Wednesday’s semifinals.
Patterson took out former WTA Tour player Jewel Peterson on Monday.
Patterson will next face a still test in French player Sherazad Benamar on Wednesday. Benamar currently holds a WTA ranking of 466.
The other semifinal will pit Allison Miller of Norcross, who has committed to Notre Dame and Jessica Hawk, who played at Austin Peay.
The men’s quarterfinals also took shape on Tuesday and those left standing include college players Nathan Rakitt, Ben Horst, and Rob Galloway. Elliott Orkin, a highly regarded junior who has signed with Florida also has made the quarters along with last year’s U.S. Open Playoffs runner up Danie van den Heever.
Play continues Wednesday morning at the Sandy Springs Tennis Center.
