Earlier this year, Greenville County Recreation, along with the Greenville Track Club and Square One Events, decided to launch a trail racing series for off-road enthusiasts. The Greenville Dirt Series is comprised of six trail races held over an eleven month span. Each race will be run at various distances, ranging from 5K to 16K.
The picturesque venues are expected to attract runners in and around the Upstate. Two races in the Series were held earlier in the year at the scenic Lake Conestee Nature Park, situated at the southern end of the Swamp Rabbit Trail.
On January 26, the first annual Ice Breaker 8K was a run on a course that featured “a mix of dirt, gravel and pavement.” Chris Giordanelli, 48, was the top overall finisher in 31:46 while 30-year-old Kristi Carlson took top honors for the female division (37:42).

Warmer temperatures and the spreading popularity of the Series saw the participant field more than triple for the second race, the 2013 Easter Bunny Trail Hop 5K at the very same venue on March 30. Again it was Giordanelli, the Simpsonville resident, who crossed the finish line first in 18:44. On the women’s side, Alex Dixon, 17, was victorious with a time of 21:50.

On May 25, the Series will shift to Paris Mountain State Park at the northern end of Greenville. The highly technical trail system of Paris Mountain, with its steep slopes and rocky terrain, will test a trail runner’s skill set. Previously an 11K course, this year the first race at this venue has been bumped up to a 12K (approximately 7.46 miles). A 7k and 16K are scheduled for later in the year and are also part of the Series.
Runners will also be eligible for awards for their participation in four of the six races in the Greenville Dirt Series. The top four races will be tallied at the end of the Series based on the number of points a runner earned from each race they participated in. Awards will be given out for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for the entire series, as well as, for each age group, male and female for each division. Special recognition will also be given to participants who run ALL 6 races!
Points are given to the top eight finishers for both males and females (1st place- 50 pts, 2nd place- 40 pts, 3rd place- 35 pts, 4th place- 30 pts, 5th place- 25 pts, 6th place- 20 pts, 7th place- 15 pts, 8th place- 10 pts).
Age group awards start with the 14 and under division: 15-19; every 5 years to 74; and over 75.
