What do you look for when you dine out? Many like to claim that they demand great service, healthy food options, etc., but more often than not, we choose to go out to eat as a matter of convenience, fully aware of the less than healthy food options sold at most restaurants. But to every generalization there is an exception and one Houston- based chain with a penchant for healthier options is Salata: The Next Generation Salad Bar.
Here’s to Your Health
Salata is a restaurant that specializes in salads, soups, wraps, and breads and it stresses good eating and good health across its menu. The chain opened its first location in downtown Houston, Texas and its name is derived from the Latin word for salad. The restaurant chain was started by Berge Simonian and brother-in-law Tony Kyoumjian- two men who noticed that salad bars, due to their better, more natural/nutritious food options, were growing in popularity. A restaurant that featured salad as the main menu item seemed like a great idea and with a little research, they launched the restaurant in the downtown Houston tunnels in 2005.
Salata is all about the salads, first and foremost, and it offers several types of lettuce along with a wide assortment of vegetables, fruit, cheese, dressings, and nut toppings to make the taste precisely to one’s personal liking. There are options for breads, soups, and crackers, as well as some different types of seasoned chicken or seafood, for a dose of added protein.
If salad isn’t your taste preference, Salata also offers wraps. Those who choose a wrap have access to the same toppings as those who select salad- the only difference is that a wrap involves enclosing the toppings in a tortilla rather than adding them to a bed of lettuce.
For beverages, Salata serves an assortment of freshly- made teas, lemonades, and filtered water. There is no soda fountain at Salata, but the restaurants do offer soft drinks, vitamin water, and other beverage options in bottled form. Bite size brownies and small cookies for dessert round out the Salata menu.
Good Brew with Your Salad or Wrap
Houston area Salata locations sell beer and wine, but only at select locations. I checked with the management and the Houston locations offering beer- and selections available- include:
- Market Street: Corona, Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, and Corona Light
- Vintage Park: Corona, Budweiser, Bud Light
- Greenway Plaza: Corona, Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, and Saint Arnold
- Westchase: Corona, Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, Saint Arnold, and Redbridge (gluten free)
There aren’t many craft beer options at Salata Restaurants, but there are a few choices and this could change very shortly as consumers continue to demand more beverage options.
Good Food, Good for You
Salata Restaurant is a growing restaurant chain with locations in Houston, other parts of Texas, and in California with more locations scheduled to open in the next year. The chain is growing quickly as more consumers discover the fresh, healthy food options and make- it- your- way, cafeteria style service.
Salata is a great place to visit for several reasons and most important among them is the healthy food options. With such an assortment of lettuce, fruits, and vegetables, Salata has most restaurant chains beat in terms of healthfulness. The chain does have some meat options, but it strives to offer only chicken and seafood because they are among the leanest and most healthy protein options. The food and beverage options are created with good health in mind and this fact is obvious from the beginning of the serving line all the way to the beverages at the end. Yes, Salata does serve some less healthy soft drinks, but these are offered only by popular demand. The restaurant emphasizes its teas and lemonade blends- beverages that are not only healthy, but also match perfectly with the salads and wraps.
Multiple restaurant chains have a salad bar and a cafeteria- style serving line, but Salata stands apart for several reasons. First, salad is not just a side item at Salata. It is the main part of the meal and is served like a meal, in a very large metal bowl. Second, Salata offers a very wide range of toppings, including nuts, assorted cheeses, fruits, and vegetables. Looking at all of those choices can even be a little overwhelming at first as consumers try to decide what they would like. But having such a wide range of choices is certainly an asset and it’s a safe bet that anyone who visits will find something he/she likes. The restaurant even promises that all of its food prepared in house is gluten and preservative free and that includes the salad dressings. Only certain items purchased from the outside do not carry the gluten free, preservative free promise.
Salata Awaits You
If Salata sounds like a restaurant for you, then visit the web site, lookup the locations, and plan your visit today. The emphasis on freshness and good health are commendable and I like that I can eat a full meal and leave the restaurant feeling great- not stuffed, not hungry, but just right. Salata has elevated itself above most all of the competition thanks to its healthier food options and it isn’t surprising that the chain is expanding so quickly. It’s a great place to visit and dine, with fresh, delicious food served your way for a fair price.
