The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active, also seen last month at Pepcom (leader in technology showcase events where the world’s top technology companies present their latest and greatest products), is the best waterproof smartphone thus far, especially for those active in summer activities and for parents of babies and toddlers. This dustproof and waterproof sibling of The Samsung Galaxy S4 (even some iPhone users admit it’s the hottest smartphone out in the market to date and they’re so glad they got this rather than the iPhone 5), is definitely a relief for all those who engage in water activities and are parents of babies and toddlers. It’s safe to get the S4 wet at the beach and pool. If vacationing in the Galapagos Islands where you get to snorkel over coral reefs and swim with sea lions and various species of fish, better be safe than sorry to double proof it in an E-Case (100% submersible, locking out water, mud, sand and snow).
It’s not all hype, and it’s all true in that the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active can be dropped in bowl of water (just like how a toddler likes to drop your cell phone in your coffee, tea, dog bowl, bathtub, toilet, sink, etc.) and it still works like a charm! When drowned in water (be sure to turn on the Aqua mode function), the S4 Active can still take photos, video and even make calls all while still being under water. The proof is in the photos of the picture gallery of this article, where I tested it myself at Pepcom, by dropping the S4 Active in the water bowl and calling myself. Miraculously, my own phone was ringing with the S4 Active (that’s submerged in the bowl of water) actually calling me. The S4 can be the water for 30 minutes, but was informed that the device has been in the bowl before the three hour event started!
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active boasts of a rear-racing 8 megapixel camera and a 2 megapixel front-facing camera (even though it’s not 13MP and image quality is not as detailed as the S4, all the same camera software and creative shooting modes are available, in addition to Aqua mode for underwater shooting), a 5″ Full HD display (it’s a TFT LCD, which is a thin film transistor liquid crystal display which delivers more natural colors, rather than Super AMOLED panel), quad-core 1.9GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot. The S4 Active is more visible outdoors under direct sunlight which is much better on the eyes. The S4 Active is a sibling of the S4, so it’s very similar in size. The regular S4 has a 13 megapixel camera on the back. The Galaxy S4 Active has a button for Menu, Home and Back, and the S4 has a button for Home and the Menu and Back buttons are on the capacitive touchscreen.
Please be advised that the S4 Active is dust proof and waterproof, and it’s not a rugged phone where you can give it to your baby or toddler to throw around. If you’re a construction worker, fireman, FEDEX/UPS or delivery worker, this phone is great IF you get insurance for it and protect it with a rugged case; otherwise, use this for your personal life and get a rugged and waterproof smartphone that costs less, such as the NEC Terrain.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active is available exclusively on AT&T for $199 (with two year contract), and $594.99 (without contract). For more detailed information about the S4 Active, click here.
