Today marks the six month anniversary of the horrific December 14, 2012 shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. June 14 was commemorated in Newtown with a 26 second moment of silence in honor of those killed last December.
Also front and center on the day’s agenda in Newtown was a renewed “call to action on gun control, with the reading of names of thousands of victims of gun violence,” according to Yahoo! News.
One of those who lost their lives inside Sandy Hook Elementary on December 14 was teacher Victoria Soto, who died using her own body to shield her first grade students from Adam Lanza’s bullets. Miss Soto’s two sisters were on hand today for the moment of silence in remembrance of the 20 children and six adults killed that fateful day.
“This pain is excruciating and unbearable but thanks to people like you, that come out and support us, we are able to get through this,” said Carlee Soto, who held hands with her sister Jillian before taking the stage.
Since the December 14 shootings in Newtown, 6,000 more people have died as a result of gun violence. The names of the 6,000 shooting victims are being read aloud today in Newtown, an activity expected to take about 12 hours.
Carlee and Jillian Soto are campaigning for gun control and spoke of their meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama.
“He just told us to have faith,” said Jillian Soto, 24. “It isn’t something that happens overnight. It’s something that you have to continue to fight for. Within good time we will have this passed and we will have change.”
Lest we forget, on December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza shot and killed his mother Nancy in their Newtown, Conn. home, and then shot his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown and proceeded to shoot and kill twenty 6- and 7-year-olds and six school staffers before putting a bullet in his own head.
