Every year, more than 100,000 people descend on San Diego for the annual Comic-Con International convention to celebrate all things pop culture. In 2013, the most anticipated, talked about, and popular TV panels at SDCC include “Game of Thrones,” “The Walking Dead,” “The Awesomes,” “True Blood,” “Breaking Bad,” “The Vampire Diaries,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “Under the Dome,” “Teen Wolf,” “TV Guide” Fan Favorites, a 20-year anniversary celebration of “The X Files,” and “Sons of Anarchy.”
Comic-Con has presented thousands of special guests at its conventions over the years, bringing creators, authors, writers, directors, producers and actors face-to-face with their fans. Over its four-decade-plus history, Comic-Con International has continually presented comic books and comic art to a growing audience. That love of the comics medium continues to be its guiding factor as the event moves toward its second half-century as the premier comic book and popular arts style convention in the world.
In 2013, Comic-Con runs from July 18-21 at the San Diego Convention Center. It started in 1970 and was called the Golden State Comic Book Convention. The name was later changed to Comic-Con International, but it’s often referred to as SDCC. The convention now includes a wider range of pop culture elements such as horror, animation, animé, toys, collectible card games, video games, webcomics, and fantasy novels. According to “Forbes,” Comic-Con is the “largest convention of its kind in the world.”
In recent years, television shows outnumber films by more than two-to-one. The shows not only promote in the exhibit halls, but also utilize screenings and panels of various actors, writers, producers, and others from their programs. More than 130,000 fans attended Comic-Con 2012.
