Strangely there has been discussions, debates…even arguments as to where Cain found a woman to marry. But using what is disclosed in the Bible and applying common sense, let us attempt to resolve the case as best we can. We know perfectly well, that Adam and Eve were the two humans God created whose charge it was, to populate the earth. God could have created a few more couples to help get the thing going, but he chose not to.
So let us go from there and see what happened. Genesis chapter four gives us the story of the first children born to Adam and Eve, the first two children to have been born of woman naturally as we know the birth process today. Now keep in mind that much time is covered in the single book of Genesis, in fact it covers 2494 years according to the chronological record by Adam Clarke, LL.D (Legum Law Doctorate), F.S.A. (Fellows of the Society of Antiquaries of London) author of one of the most respected and popular commentaries of the whole Bible.
There are also many entries in the Bible in which one incident may follow another with no explanation as to whether this occurred immediately after the other one, or if it may have been a long period afterward. This is without doubt one of those times. Read the chapter four linked above and you will see what happens after Cain killed his own brother, and God sent him away. You will find in verses 16 and 17:
“And Cain went out from the presence of Jehovah, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch”.
Notice there is no time lapse shown from when he went to the land of Nod and the time he built a city. But common sense tells us that even after his wife conceived, there was the gestation period and then time was taken to build a city, all of this in and more included in those two verses. It does not tell how long he dwelt in that land before he married a wife, nor does it disclose who she was and where she came from. So let us examine some other facts that are disclosed later.
Some have ventured the opinion that God had created others but that will not work. We can go back to Genesis chapter 3, where it says this: “And the man called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.” (Genesis 3:20 ASV) So that idea is worthless. It was so even without the scripture noted here, because the Bible does not make any mention of such and it assuredly would have, if it was factual.
No, Adam lived to be nine hundred and thirty years, so the answer is obviously shown in in the following passage of scripture. And keep in mind that his first two sons, Cain and Abel were probably born and fully grown well within the first century of Adam’s life.
And Adam lived a hundred and thirty years, and begat [a son] in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth: and the days of Adam after he begat Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters. (Genesis 5:3-4 ASV)
So, without having any information as to when any of these were born (other than Seth) there is no reason to reject the possibility that Cain married either a sister of his, or a niece. Cain could have lived contemporarily with either of those. There is no evidence in existence to indicate there were any other people at that time.
The argument that arises from the above thought is God made clear that one is not to marry or procreate of near kindred. This is brought out clearly in the 18th chapter of Leviticus, and it is suggested that one read that chapter in conjunction with this thought.
However, that scripture with those restrictions was given to the Jews upon their being chosen to furnish the lineage to Jesus. It is not recorded as a law or regulation under the Patriarchal dispensation. This interaction with close family members would have had to be allowed to populate the earth from the very beginning. And geneticists tell us that there would have been no danger of mutant genes in the genetic system during the period from the beginning but would have begun to be dangerous by the time of the passage in Leviticus which was 2514 years later.
And we must remember that God ordered Adam and Eve to populate the earth. How else could it have been done from only one pair (couple) created in the beginning?
We have to accept the Holy Bible as being inerrant since it was written under the oversight of the almighty and all wise God of the universe. There are many aspects which require study and prayerful meditation, but we can find the answers if we diligently seek them. “I love them that love me; And those that seek me diligently shall find me.” (Proverbs 8:17)
