The 2013 Three Village Central School District (TVCSD) budget that passed on May 21st included 58.3 teaching cuts district wide. According to the Budget overview presented by the Board of Education (BOE), two major factors contributed to increasing costs. Those included a 37 percent increase for the Teachers’ Retirement System and a 15 percent increase for health insurance.
Parents at the Setauket Elementary school began hearing whispers that a large majority of the “amazing” teachers were loosing their positions based solely on tenure (length of time at TVCSD). In the end, Setauket will loose approximately nine strong teachers.
In addition to the loss of the Setauket teachers, the BOE recently approved the decision to transfer Ms. Kathryn White to serve as Principal for W.S. Mount Elementary School. With Ms. White’s departure, Dr. Nathalie Lilavois (current W.S. Mount Elementary Principal) will be acting as the Setauket School Principal effective August 1.
Setauket parent and Parent Teacher Association (PTA) members began to circulate letters and emails encouraging community members to attend the BOE meeting on Tuesday, June 25th to voice their disagreement about the Principal changes between the two schools. In addition, a recent petition has been created to persuade the BOE to reverse the decision. The petition goal is to reach 200 signatures.
