SyFy and The Asylum announced on Wed., July 31 a first-ever merchandising program with Earthbound LLC for their hit original horror film, “Sharknado.” Earthbound LLC is a direct-to-retail and brand licensing agency which will extend the pop culture and social media phenomenon of “Sharknado” into a wide range of potential merchandise, including fashion tees, bags, posters, accessories, costumes and gaming, among other areas.
A social media frenzy generated unprecedented press coverage for the so-bad-it-was-good “Sharknado,” starring former “Beverly Hills 90210” star Ian Ziering and Tara Reid about sharks sucked up from the ocean by water spouts and dropped on unsuspecting Los Angelinos. The movie has already repeated several more times, airing in Riverside on DirecTV channel 244 and Time Warner Cable channel 46.
“Sharknado” was the most social-telecast in SyFy’s history, generating nearly a half-million mentions when the movie premiered on July 11, and SyFy has already announced plans for a sequel, “Sharknado 2,” which will be set in New York City and premiere in July 2014. There has been much media buzz this week that Tara Reid would not be asked to return to the sequel, but the producers claimed in a report in “Entertainment Weekly” that no such decision has been made.
Fans will be able to attack the first wave of “Sharknado” t-shirts when they hit retail stores nationally within the coming weeks.
“The public’s appetite for the incredible ‘Sharknado’ franchise has been remarkable,” said Jeff Li, Vice President, SyFy Ventures. “The bold and over-the-top ‘Sharknado’ brand is the perfect fit for a wide range of fun merchandise, providing partners with the unique opportunity to drive consumer excitement and retail sales.”
“The worldwide response to ‘Sharknado’ has again proven the power of SyFy. We look forward to launching a major program with ‘Sharknado’ and other strategic product extensions with Syfy,” said Jeffrey Cohen, Co-Founder and President of Earthbound.
“We’re excited to be working with Earthbound and SyFy, and to seeing ‘Sharknado’ on every t-shirt, umbrella, and chainsaw in America,” said Paul Bales, Partner at The Asylum.
“Sharknado” next airs on SyFy on Aug. 22 at 10 p.m. PST.
