On July 31, 2013, Sharon Osbourne became the first of Simon Cowell’s colleagues to publicly comment on the news that he is expecting a child with New York socialite Lauren Silverman, who is in the process of divorcing her husband, Andrew Silverman, a real-estate mogul. Cowell has been a close friend to the Silvermans, who have not yet publicly commented on the pregnancy. This will be the first child for Cowell, who is 53. Andrew and Lauren Silverman (who is 36) have a 7-year-old son named Adam. Cowell and Lauren Silverman’s child is reportedly due in February 2014, according to Us Weekly.
Cowell has never been married. In several interviews, he has said that he didn’t want to become a father because he’s too much of a workaholic to be a good parent. It’s not clear at this time how much of a parenting role Cowell will have in his child’s life. Cowell and Lauren Silverman have not publicly stated if they are a couple or not.
Cowell’s U.K.-based publicist told People magazine: “This is a very sensitive issue and all media enquiries are being dealt with by his U.S. attorney.”
Osbourne (who is 60) has been a longtime employee of Cowell, who is a creator/executive producer of “The X Factor” and “America’s Got Talent.” Osbourne was a judge on “The X Factor” U.K. from 2004 to 2007, and she rejoined the show in 2013 as a replacement for fired judge Tulisa Contostavlos. Osbourne was also a judge on “America’s Got Talent” from 2007 to 2012. She has been a music manager since the late 1970s, most notably as the manager of her husband, Ozzy Osbourne.
Osbourne has been a co-host of “The Talk” since the show’s debut 2010. (Cowell is not involved in “The Talk.”) She commented about Lauren Silverman and Cowell on “The Talk” in the episode that was televised on July 31, 2013: “I know that they have been friends for a while, for a few years. I think it happens, doesn’t it? These things thing happen! I do happen to think he’ll be a good father. He is so good with children. People don’t know that about him … He said he never wanted to have kids and he doesn’t like animals, but he adores animals, and he adores kids.”
In April 2013, Cowell told the Sunday Mirror: “Would I like kids? If I knew I could be, and how could I put this delicately, faithful, then yes. I do like kids. I’m not sure I would be a good dad for the first six months or so but once they know who I am, I would like it. I definitely haven’t ruled out having children. I think I’d rather have my own but then again I wouldn’t completely rule out adopting either. If I did have a child, I have to say I’d prefer a girl.”
Meanwhile, David Walliams (who is on the “Britain’s Got Talent” judging panel with Cowell) confirmed that Cowell is going to become a father, by tweeting on July 31, 2013: “Oh yeah, and @SimonCowell is doing a baby with a lady.”
