The Shore Athletic Club celebrated the 50th year of the Lake Takanassee Summer Series of races on Monday evening July 29, 2013 at the Lake in Long Branch, N.J.
The series has been held during the summer for 50 years.
On hand were many of the past winners and participants in the races. The event was organized by Elliot Denman of west Long Branch, N.J. a former Olympics Race Walker.
The series has from inception included a 1500 meter run which takes the participants around the lake a little over one time and a 5K which the runners go around the lake 4 times.
The race includes runners and a competitive race walk.
Prior to the start of the 5K Elliot Denman gave a short history of the series and introduced some of the notables and their accomplishments over the years. Ten Dave DeMonico who was also a frequent past winners played the National Anthem as the runners stood at attention.
Penny Hinck of Monmouth Beach recalls the series as a 9 year old girl. She would run the 1500 meters as at that time in the early 70’s women were not allowed to run in the 5k as it was thought to be too strenuous for women. She ran the race last night with her mother Marilyn Ryder who has been a frequent participant for the last several years.
Bill Scholl of Wall Township who at one time was a world class marathoner winning the Philadelphia Marathon and having marathon times in the 2 hour and 10 minute range remembers competing in the races starting in 1967. He counts about a dozen wins over that period.
Patty Hancock of Toms River and now the Ocean Running Club has participated many times as early as 1983 and also ran the race last night with her competitor at the time Theresa Marciani of Brick, N.J..
Long Branch Mayor Adam Schneider who is an avid runner and a frequent participant over the years was also on hand and ran the race as he has done many times.
Bob Hayes of Long Branch, who has a record of running every day for over 25 years, was also on hand. Bob has run in every single race since 1982.
Rich Kenah of Wall Township and a former Olympian in the 800 meters was also a participant in the 5K.
Dave Sauls a frequent top past participant who has run over 100 marathons and now lives in Delaware made the trip up to join in the celebration.
Robert Cavanaugh of West Long Branch who is one of the shores top runners was directing the youth 1500 meter race.
But the most famous Lake Takanassee runner has to be Harry Nolan. Harry has run in the series every year since its inception including this one. He has recorded over that time 131 first place finishes. Harry continues to compete and was one of the top finishers again.
After the races were held participants were treated to refreshments including a cake to mark the occasion.
The series will continue through the summer every Monday evening starting at 6:30 p.m.
Congratulations to Shore Athletic Club and they are looking forward to another 50 years.
