Coming from a background of antique collectors, I enjoy the feeling of granny’s attic with treasures a-plenty just waiting to be discovered. Sifu Design Studio has all this and more.
Lisa Whiting, the proprietor of this unique arts & crafts supply store at 6054 N. Broadway in the Edgewater neighborhood, has artfully arranged her displays using vintage household items like an old phone stuffed with yarn balls, a Notre Dame steamer trunk with bags of surprise yarn, and old windows lung with colorful strands. It is no surprise that the set up in this store is inviting, colorful and encourages shoppers to explore every nook and cranny. Lisa has a degree in Fine Arts from the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit and it shows!
Currently planning some great surprises for new and old customers alike during the 2013 Yarn Crawl this coming weekend, http://usedview.com/article/chicagoland-yarn-crawl-takes-place-august-3-11-2013 Lisa will re-set all the displays for an even fresher look to entice her customers to see and learn what’s available for their creative pleasures.
I recently attended one of Sifu’s regular Sunday Stitch & Brunches at the store and it is like the family reunion of a big happy family that even welcomes the long-lost cousin with open arms. There’s food, there’s yarn and there is happy chatter from 10-ish in the morning until everyone just has to stop crocheting and knitting and go home to get the laundry done! Everyone brings their latest culinary endeavor to share and there is plenty of coffee.
Lisa is a passionate fiber artist who is willing to patiently offer help to her customers for free on Sundays during brunch. However, many formal classes are also offered. She has a talent for coming up with unique activities to market her yarn and the myriad of other crafty fiber-related products she keeps on hand. Sci-Fiber Friday is no exception. Every week at 7 PM there is a free movie screening and craft circle for people to watch a different Science Fiction movie. Lisa says, “Come space craft with us, the best place to work on your U.F.O.’s (unfinished objects).”
Re-craft Your Stash is a way to re-cycle yarn you’ll never use and get a little cash to buy what you want. Unique in Chicago, this is the only store that offers 20% credit for stash in good condition that has not be used from a smoke-free store. As long as the original tags are on, stash will be accepted even if not purchased originally at Sifu.
