“The X Factor” executive producer Simon Cowell, 53, has had plenty of scandal and controversy in his life, including how he is about to become a father for the first time. He has reportedly impregnated a 36-year-old married American socialite named Lauren Silverman, who is now in the process of getting a divorce from her husband, Andrew Silverman, who is a real-estate mogul. On July 31, 2013, People magazine reported that multiple sources have confirmed that Cowell is the father of Lauren Silverman’s baby, whose due date has not been made public. Us Weekly is reporting that Lauren Silverman is 10 weeks pregnant, which would make her due to give birth in February 2014.
Andrew Silverman and Lauren Silverman have a 7-year-old son named Adam.
The Silvermans have been close friends of Cowell’s for several years, but now it’s obvious how close Cowell really got to Lauren, who in the past has publicly made disparaging remarks about Cowell’s engagement to Mezhgan Hussainy, the former “American Idol” makeup artist whom Cowell was engaged to from 2010 to 2011.
Cowell has never been married, but he has said in interviews for years that he does not want to become a father because he’s too much of a workaholic to be a good parent.
In April 2013, Cowell told the Sunday Mirror: “Would I like kids? If I knew I could be, and how could I put this delicately, faithful, then yes. I do like kids. I’m not sure I would be a good dad for the first six months or so, but once they know who I am, I would like it. I definitely haven’t ruled out having children. I think I’d rather have my own, but then again I wouldn’t completely rule out adopting either. If I did have a child, I have to say I’d prefer a girl.”
Meanwhile, David Walliams (who is on the “Britain’s Got Talent” judging panel with Cowell) confirmed that Cowell is going to become a father, by tweeting on July 31, 2013: “Oh yeah, and @SimonCowell is doing a baby with a lady.”
It’s not clear at this time how much of a parenting role Cowell will have in his child’s life, since Cowell and Lauren Silverman have not publicly stated if they are a couple or not.
Cowell’s U.K.-based publicist told People: “This is a very sensitive issue and all media enquiries are being dealt with by his U.S. attorney.”
The Silvermans have not made any public comments about this situation, but the media will no doubt dig up the Silvermans’ divorce papers (which are public record) to see if they can find out any further details about Lauren Silverman’s affair with Cowell.
The most recent paparazzi photos of Cowell and Silverman together were from April 2013, when she, Andrew Silverman and several of Cowell’s other friends (including Hussainy) spent time vacationing together on a yacht in St. Barts.
Cowell has stayed friendly with many of his ex-girlfriends, including Hussainy, former pop star Sinitta, “Extra” correspondent Terri Seymour (who dated Cowell from 2002 to 2008) and Jackie St. Clair. Sinitta, St. Clair and Hussainy frequently travel and spend vacations with Cowell. Hussainy was with Cowell at several “X Factor” U.S. auditions in 2013.
Since breaking off his engagement with Hussainy, Cowell has been seen on dates with American socialite Zeta Graff, Brazilian socialite Ana Paula Junqueira, actress/singer Carmen Electra, singer/songwriter Louise Griffiths and actress Janina Gavankar. Graff told the media that she and Cowell were “just friends,” while Electra pretty much admitted in interviews that she and Cowell were lovers. The other women have not publicly commented about the nature of their relationships with Cowell.
Cowell usually does not talk about his love life in interviews. However, the 2012 unauthorized biography “Sweet Revenge: The Intimate Life of Simon Cowell” described him as someone whose serious relationships fail usually because he is a workaholic who finds it impossible to stay faithful to one woman and he refuses to get married. He also tends to date women who are at least 10 years younger than he is.
“Sweet Revenge” also said that even though many people suspect that Cowell is gay because he has never been married, there has been no evidence that he is gay or bisexual, and all the evidence shows that he is a heterosexual playboy. Sources told “Sweet Revenge” author Tom Bower that Cowell prefers to date women whom he thinks are inferior to him intellectually. In addition, he has a long history of having flings with strippers, models and porn actresses. Cowell also has dated many women he’s worked with, including Sinitta, Hussainy, former “X Factor” U.K. judge Dannii Minogue, former “X Factor” Australia judge Natalie Imbruglia and “X Factor”/”Britain’s Got Talent” makeup artist Julia Carta.
The Silvermans are mentioned several times in “Sweet Revenge,” which also has photos (provided by Lauren) of the Silvermans vacationing with Cowell and some of his other friends. Andrew Silverman is described as a longtime trusted adviser to Cowell. Lauren Silverman is described as Cowell’s “best friend in New York.” Obviously, this pregnancy has changed the nature of Cowell’s relationship with the Silvermans.
The book also described Lauren Silverman as being “completely flabbergasted” when Cowell told her in 2010 that he had proposed to Hussainy, and that Lauren had this to say to Andrew about Cowell and Hussainy’s engagement: “The whole thing is wrong.” Considering Lauren Silverman’s affair with Cowell that has resulted in a pregnancy, that comment can now be seen in a very different light.
Lauren Silverman is quoted several times in the book, so she clearly gave author Bower interviews for the book. Her only comments about Cowell are about his relationship with Hussainy and expressing disapproval of Cowell getting engaged to Hussainy. (Silverman was one of the guests at an April 2012 party in London to celebrate the release of “Sweet Revenge.” Cowell and Bower were also at the party, where Cowell made a rare public apology to people who might have been hurt or offended by the revelations in the book.)
According to “Sweet Revenge,” Cowell almost immediately regretted proposing to Hussainy, who reportedly did not like how much time Cowell devoted to his work. The relationship also fell apart because they could not agree about having children (She wanted children; he didn’t.) It also didn’t help matters that Cowell’s mother did not like Hussainy, according to “Sweet Revenge.”
The book also claims that Cowell and Hussainy secretly broke up in the spring of 2011, but they agreed to pretend to still be engaged until after “The X Factor” launched in the U.S. in the autumn of 2011. It was around this time that Hussainy was seen in public not wearing her engagement ring, she moved out of his house, and Cowell began to avoid questions about the status of his relationship with Hussainy. He finally admitted to the media in January 2012 that he and Hussainy were no longer a couple but that they would remain friends.
In a rare interview in which he talked about his love life, Cowell admitted to The Guardian in September 2011 (before it was publicly known that he and Hussainy had broken up) that he made “palimony” settlements with some of his ex-girlfriends who were in long-term relationships with him. Sinitta, Seymour and Hussainy are all believed to be among those who have been gotten palimony settlements from Cowell. According to several reports, Seymour and Hussainy each live in Beverly Hills mansions that were paid for by Cowell. Seymour’s mansion is reportedly worth $5 million, while Hussainy’s mansion is reportedly worth $8 million.
Those settlements no doubt include confidentiality agreements. When model Jasmine Lennard, who is one of Cowell’s former lovers, was a contestant on the U.K.’s “Celebrity Big Brother” in 2012, she hinted that Cowell payed her to not to blab details of their affair.
According to “Sweet Revenge,” Cowell’s relationships with his girlfriends would frequently overlap with secret affairs. For example, while Cowell was living with Seymour, he was allegedly secretly dating Hussainy and Carta. Sinitta and St. Clair are reportedly very jealous of each other because Cowell allegedly cheated on Sinitta with St. Clair and vice versa. And now it seems that Lauren Silverman is part of Cowell’s complicated web of affairs with past and present lovers.
