With E3 behind us and announcements of the new Xbox One and PlayStation 4 coming out in time for the Christmas season it’s hard to think of anything else but the new consoles on the horizon. However for most gamers aged 4-13 there’s only one thing on their mind that they want as a gift this holiday season: the new Skylanders game.
Since its introduction in late 2011, Skylanders has become one of the highest grossing video games of all time. In January 2013 the franchise hit $500 million in US sales alone. There is already over 100 different figures to collect and with two games already out and this third one on the way it will be almost certain that Activision will have pockets filled with cash come Christmas time; that is unless Disney Interactive Studios has anything to say about it.
The long running and successful video game company has followed suite with Activision and are releasing the game Disney Infinity which uses the same style of figure/portal technology that Skylanders made so popular.
For those who don’t know, in Skylanders the player takes control of a character in-game that sits on a portal device as a figure outside the game. To switch characters the player simply removes one figure and replaces it with a new one. In order to get new characters, new figures most be bought from a local video game or toy store.
Disney Interactive hopes to see the same if not greater success than the Skylanders series has and with their huge collection of characters from both the Disney universe and Pixar films by their side, they are destined to be a contender for most sought after holiday gift this year. With the likes of Buzz Lightyear and Sulley from Monsters University how can they not be?
Now the question is who will win this battle of figure collecting video game technology, and inspire the most children’s bliss? Let’s break it down:
Skylanders Swap Force
- Already has an established, loyal fan base
- The desire to collect them all will be brought back with this new game
- New swappable technology which allows bottom and top halves to be intermixed between characters.
- Over 250 unique character options
- Brand new experience that might be appealing to gamers tired of Skylanders
- Play as favorite Disney and Pixar characers for the first time
- Monsters University, Toy Story, The Incredibles, and Cars are just a few of the series included
- Toy Box mode that allows characters from different movies to interact with each other and for the player to create their own adventures
It’s tough to say which will be the most popular of the two come this winter, but I think it will be narrowed down to whether or not your child is a die-hard Skylanders fan looking to expand their collection even more or someone who loves everything Disney and Pixar and wants to interact with some of their favorite characters for the first time in an open world where they can create their own adventure.
Either way it’s safe to say that both of these titles will be selling a lot of copies especially around the end of the year in time for the holidays. Disney Infinity will be available August 18, 2013 almost a full two months before Skylanders Swap Force will be hitting shelves (October 13, 2013). We will see if those two months are enough to give it the competitive edge it needs to keep up with the juggernaut that is the Skylanders series.
