Filming is currently underway in Wilmington, North Carolina for ‘Sleepy Hollow,’ FOX’s highly anticipated drama. This means that we will learn more about this ambitious series during the next month leading up to its September 16th premiere at 9 p.m. As the dust settles in the aftermath of Comic-Con madness, new details are hitting the web-waves.
In an interview with Dread Central, ‘Sleepy Hollow’ executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Bob Orci, Mark Goffman, and Len Wiseman discuss their hopes for this very promising series:
They already have a three-season plan but are still keeping it “open to twists and turns.” Don’t expect a “monster of the week” type formula; there is a “master puppeteer plotting” things who “has an end game.” All the “villains are connected in a giant chess game” with the first season being about “Who knows what?” “Who can you trust?” Further complicating matters, some of the townspeople are descended from people Ichabod knew in the past.
Will those descendants help Crane or cause more trouble? Are they following in their relatives footsteps as possible members of the Freemasons Society, are they practicing witchcraft like Crane’s dearly departed wife, Katrina, or are they completely clueless of ‘Sleepy Hollow’s’ spooky history?
With such dense mythology at its core, ‘Sleepy Hollow’ will not be like other formulaic procedurals and it will not drop dynamic leads, Tom Mison and Nicole Beharie, in the typical Hollywood rom-com pit-falls. Crane is haunted by visions of his wife and he is still deeply in love with her, so don’t expect to see him making moves on Mills any time soon. According to Mison and Beharie, Crane and Mills will portray a different type of on-screen partnership. Dread Central reports:
Nicole described her character as “complex… and very badass.” She has “a dark past” that we’ll learn about later, but don’t expect a typical episode structure, building and building. “Sleepy Hollow” is “more like a movie than a series.” …
Nicole summed it up that yes, there’s action, they’re shooting guns, but it’s “grounded in reality.” Tom pointed out Abbie is a female lead role “not defined by the guy she’s with,” something that attracted him to the script. She’s “Mary Tyler Moore with a gun,” joked Nicole…
Based on what we’ve heard so far, Crane and Mills are working together to find answers that can help them resolve their individual personal problems, as well as prevent the impending apocalypse. Their banter will be fun to watch, but it doesn’t seem like we’ll see serious heat between the two of them in the near future. However, there will still be a fair share of romance.
Crane is pining for his true love, Katrina. After all, Mison told ‘Entertainment Weekly’ that the show is “devastatingly romantic.” On the other hand, Beharie teases that anything is possible on ‘Sleepy Hollow.’ Check out the embedded video of their interview with TVLine’s Michael Ausiello to see what Mison says about the surprising deaths, resurrections, and monsters that are all part of this wondrous world.
The “anything is possible” mantra has done wonders for similar shows like CW’s ‘Supernatural’ and NBC’s ‘Grimm’ by giving writers the freedom to explore imaginative storylines that other dramas may deem as ridiculous, impossible, or laughably unbelievable. Hopefully, it will bring the same level of success to ‘Sleepy Hollow.’ When fantasy remains grounded in a sense of serious reality, viewers become more invested in these characters and the other-worldly scenarios they find themselves in. At the end of the day, we all want to believe that anything is possible.
