The +421 Foundation held its eight annual Slovak Fashion Night fashion show, on May 9th at The DL, located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The motto for this year’s event was “Fashion Unites Us”, where five designers showcasing womenswear from Slovakia, Austria, and the Czech Republic.
Slavomira Vlasova, winner of Bratislava Fashion Days, presented two collection at the show. Her first collection titled, “Moments of Life”, kicked off the show. Six dresses from the collection was presented. Five of them were of a light copper color, with four of those having intricate black lace detail or patterns. One dress was white and worn with a short cropped jacket with white wings attached. A few segments later, Ms. Vlasova presented her “Ethno” collection, which she made specifically to be shown in New York. This collection consisted of six white dresses with even more intricate black detailing; and traditional, ethnic Slovakian hats. Slovakian signer Celeste Cunningham modeled and performed a couple songs during this segment.
Silvia Kissova was the second designer to present. Her collection titled “Spirit of Space”, inspired by the Chrysler Building in New York City was created with fellow designer Filip Placko. They are both students of Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, Slovakia. The six outfit shown each had a white color foundation, with some light cream, silver, or light green colors present. The looks were mature and the constructions were creative, making for pretty elegant and interesting pieces. Slovakian violinist Filip Pogady preformed during her segment.
Austrian fashion designer Maria Steiner was the guest star of the show. She presented ten looks from her Ruins of Modernity label’s Autumn/Winter 2013-2014 collection. For this collection, Ms. Steiner used layers, and the idea of shadows to reveal and conceal a woman. Most of the outfits were black and relatively conservative. In a bold contrast, there were a few short, see-thru, light colored outfits that were very sexy.
Maria Stranekova presented her “Eternity” collection, showing ten looks. It was a very soft, feminine collection of silk dresses displaying custom made dust patterns. The theme was consistent throughout each look, yet each outfit was unique and stood on its own. In addition to designing with MAYAMAY and avant-garde group of designers; Ms. Stranekova is head of Fashion design studio at Tomas Bata University in Zlín, and a part time lecturer.
Tereza Maslanova and Radka Hortova representing the student label Czechdesign from the Tomas Bata University in Zlin unveiled their Newintage collection. The six looks had a sporty, day-time, and cocktail look, with it rich cream, and deep blue colors. This was one of the segments where Elizabeth Tam – Miss New York United States 2012, modeled.
